Last summer my partner Mike @firestationsband came sailing with me in the Hebrides. He turned it into an album. For the last 5 years or so I’ve had the honour of sailing with @sailbritain and it was the first time he’d ever come. It’s fair to say the weather gave us a battering that year, but the intensity of it was creatively productive. This album grew out of that time and after as we travelled along the Ardnamurchan peninsula, across the isles of Mull and Ulva to the isle of Gometra where we stayed with dear pals. Along the way we encountered lyrics, sea warped battered instruments and the whole time, mike was responding through sound, me through image making. 🏝️🏝️🏝️🏝️ The pre sale is launched today via @lostmaprecords and the first single “a weight starts to lift” is available to listen to in the streamy places. It’s fair to say I’m seriously proud of how Mike has weaved this and I’m happy to have played on it (vocals /flute/horn) and designed the artwork. (More collaborations in place please babe 🥰) Big thanks to crew and dear friends @_emilyvevans_ and @lovelylawn for the horses on the cover and label respectively - a literal interpretation of the Beaufort scale “many white horses” 🐴🐴🐴

My friend Anna Selby @thenaturetable is an amazing poet who writes en la mer, underwater with a waterproof note pad. To honour her words (and genius) some of the crew and I read laminated poems from her collection ‘Field Notes’ in the sea off the north coast of the isle of rum back in their watery habitat. 📸 in the water @kayleighmcguinnessartist 🏆 With @blobina @emmashoard @morvern.studios @sailbritain 🏝✨ life of islands 2023

There’s an exhibition coming up soon at @waspsstudios of new work that has grown out of the last 2 years of sailing expeditions with @sailbritain Patriothall, Edinburgh EH3 5Ay PV Fri 1 May, 5–x7pm Open: Sat 2 & Sun 3 May, 10am–6pm it’s a crew effort with lots of previous life of islands pals sharing things too - @_emilyvevans_ is showing outcomes from her research into how different people used her portable collage kit (she lent it to me for a stint and I made a series of receipt printer comics whilst on the isle of Eigg - one of those will be in the show). There’ll also be a mock-up of the album Mike @firestationsband and I made, which began life on the boat (it sold out but there are some CD copies via @lostmaprecords floating around). We also commissioned our crewmate Lauren @lovelylawn , and Simon @simon.hamlyn to make us a music video for one of the singles, which will be part of the exhibition - its beautiful, made using a portable scanner and screen printed frames. 💙 I’m also really excited to catch up with @ali_gemma and @sarahjoelywalkerart have made in response to our storm-bound week last year, even though we couldn’t go anywhere, the light and water were incredible and I liked the chat. It was pretty wild to be in the epicentre of an almost cyclone! Following Seas brings together around 20 interdisciplinary artists who’ve been at sea in the Hebrides where Na Fir Ghorma (The Blue Men of the Minch) rub shoulders with the Blue Economy. The show explores ocean lore through cultural, historical and environmental lenses, with photography, screen printing, film, music, costume and more, alongside a symposium of spoken and sung word in Gaelic and English. Big thanks to the crew for organising—especially Oliver, Phoebe @phoeberoze and Seb.

The Life of Islands Residency 2026 - application deadline 22nd Feb. Islands are special places, their social and ecological niches offering inspiration for different ways of doing things. The Life of Islands Residency offers artists a space to explore notions of remoteness, connection and identity, at the intersection between land and sea. Together we’ll reflect on 'islandness' with a particular focus on inhabited places. We will make inland visits and actively explore the connections between us as crew using Merlin, our boat, as a metaphor for a community in which we will share our values and ideas. The boat, serving as our island, will bring us together to develop and exchange perspectives. Wonderful things have happened on this residency, the soundtrack for this post is 'Silversands' from the album Many White Horses, by @firestationsband , composed on Merlin and the Isle of Rum by our wonderful residency facilitator @laurachops and Mike Cranny ❤️❤️ The Life of Islands is 18th – 24th July 2026, from Mallaig, Scotland

Volcano day ⚠️🌋✨😃 Road trip adventures with cherry pie in Twin peaks, then headed to the pacific coast at seaside Oregon, before driving via the bridge of the gods (and the PCT!), up the Columbia river valley, across idahos infinitive wheat mountains, dive bars in Missoula Montana, David lynch land, to Wyoming. Camping amongst bears in Yellowstone and grand Teton National parks and home again via Washington state, mount Rainer and the north cascades. Wtaf. I’m so grateful. America is so mad. Its unreal to me that I was able to do this. And there’s no way we could have if it wasn’t for the excellent Jeff @sasquatch_brittanicus and his family for such hospitality putting us up all across the north west, lending us camping gear and showing us around with serious generosity. Thank you Jeff!!! Also big thanks to Mike @firestationsband for putting in a load of the miles and my fellow passenger, the infectiously cheerful @helen.foan - volcano day 4eva xoxo xx
