Arabic lettering – and its evolution – based on the Diwani calligraphic style. This piece was originally drawn to be on a garment as part of a collaboration with London-based @consul.studio for @artists.for.aid fundraising concert (Los Angeles, January 2026). We didn’t use it, so it can live here for now as a 2026 wish for the world. :-)

I’ve had the pleasure to collaborate with the talented designers @consul.studio , in creating Arabic letterings for part of the merch design of the @artists.for.aid fundraising event, as well as a calligraphic “Peace” that found itself on stage. Thanks to Sudanese Canadian singer-songwriter @mustafathepoet , all participating musicians, off-stage teams, and audience, the ‭$‬5.5 million raised have been donated to The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and The Sudanese American Physicians Association. May we all keep helping one another.

My darling Beirut, I wanted to draw what you are to me: A city in perpetual motion—joyful, playful, and endlessly surprising. This Arabic lettering is my contribution to the group “exhibit-in-a-booklet” entitled: And you remained distant when we arrived curated by Amin Alsaden, and held at Rose and Shaheen Saleeby Museum in Beirut. I’ve also added a selection of my sketches and visual thoughts on page 2. The exhibition will be on until July 15, 2025, so if you’re in Beirut, do go as it is in dialogue with a parallel showcase on modernist Art in Lebanon, including many forerunners of the local Hurufiyya movement. Copies of the booklets are being sold at the gallery and include the Beiruts of: Antoine Abi Aad, Imad Gebrael, Karim Farah, Khajag Apelian, Kristyan Sarkis, Lara Assouad, Nada Abdallah, Naji El Mir, Pascal Zoghbi, Sally Mallat, Wael Morcos, and Yara Khoury Nammour. Thank you Amin (@amin.alsaden , also for the booklet interior photo) and AUB Art Galleries (@aubartgalleries ) for this lovely project! “Peace upon a land that was created for peace, but has not seen a peaceful day” Mahmoud Darwish. Or not yet… All we have left as puppets of the insanity of the world’s leaderships is to hope for this peace, everywhere and for everyone… #arabiclettering #arabicletters #mahmouddarwish #mahmouddarwishquotes #محمود_درويش #الخط_العربي #lara_captan #تصميم

I intended to celebrate and launch my Arabic type foundry on this International Women’s Day 2023. But as these things go, I’m still busy writing stories and editing the EULA. Nonetheless, it’s dear to my heart to announce that my almost public type foundry is named after my mother, Amale, as a homage to continuity and forward-thinking Arab women and in honor of the foundry’s core value of creating warm, inspiring, and long-lasting connections with people. The website will be up soon. For now, you can stroll around @amafoundry . The Latin lettering of the logo was designed by my dear friend @iamariamontes .
