One of the biggest challenges of Mirinda Burst was bringing all the personality of the typeface to so many global markets. 🍉🍓🍎 This envolved the most extense Latin alphabet coverage we’ve ever made (including Vietnamese) and the beautiful Arabic designed by @azalam , not to mention over 10 different monetary symbols so PepsiCo can bring Mirinda to the world. 🌍 Our thanks to Donny Trương for his consulting on Vietnamese and to Azza Alamedine for designing, engineering and post-producing the Arabic for us, we couldn’t have done it without you. 🍍🍊🍋 Check out the full case study over at Behance.🥝🍏🍋‍🟩

Today we will continue our tour of Arabic & Latin shop signs across the Middle East and head to Lebanon, my home country ❤️. By sharing these photos, I aim to highlight the varied ways countries display Arabic and Latin scripts in their bilingual signage. Each nation brings its own unique aesthetic sensibilities, cultural influences, and graphic traditions to the design of these signs. Observations about bilingual signs in Lebanon: • Arabic on shop signs in Lebanon often use the Naskh and Ruq'ah styles, with a preference for clean, legible forms over sophisticated calligraphy. • In popular neighbourhoods hand painted shop signs are still more common than printed ones. • Most independent shops rely on custom lettering or calligraphy for their Arabic signage, with only a few using existing Arabic fonts. You can check out the previously showcased bilingual signs of Morocco and Iran in my feed! PS: I was going to write the word Lebanon in a traditional Thuluth script. But after the events of the past couple of weeks (or years, really), these letters better represent the noise inside my head💥. #BilingualSigns #CulturalDesign #Arabic #Lettering #Fonts #Calligraphy #Typography #Lebanon

Playpen Sans Multiscript sneak peek /// We’re happy to show you some of the work in progress on our upcoming Playpen Sans Multiscript release. Today we're showing Playpen Sans Arabic, by Azza Alameddine (@azalam ), and Playpen Sans Hebrew, by Tom Grace. Playpen Sans is our award-winning handwriting type family that manages to be casual without being childish. Rather than sharing basic shapes, all the scripts share the process of the letters being made with a digital pen, maintaining the human look of true handwriting. We have also designed several alternates for every glyph in each script and substitute them on-the-fly to enhance the typeface’s realism. Watch this space for more on the upcoming release. In the meantime, you can find out more about Playpen Sans (and download it free) on our website. The link is in our bio.

We continue our tour of Arabic & Latin shop signs across the Middle East. Today we will travel to the most eastern part of that region: Iran! By sharing these photos, I aim to showcase the diverse approaches adopted by different countries that use the Arabic and Latin scripts in crafting bilingual signage. Each country infuses its own distinctive cultural nuances and design heritage into the process. Observations about bilingual signs in Iran: • The predominant calligraphic style for Arabic isn't always Nasta'liq, as I initially assumed. Naskh is actually commonly seen across various contexts. • Although type design in Iran is of very high quality, unfortunately, you don't see good typefaces used on shop signs. • There is a tendency to invent letterforms structure in newly designed logo adaptations (eg. Samsung, Canon). You can check out the previously showcased bilingual signs of Morocco on my feed! #BilingualSigns #CulturalDesign #Arabic #Lettering #Fonts #Calligraphy #Typography

Looking at bilingual shop signs in a country offers insight into its visual culture. While some designs may appear random, they are the outcome of deliberate or subconscious choices made by designers and influenced by their skill and design education. For my job, I take thousands of images of Arabic & Latin signs, spanning from big brands to small local shops across the world. Through sharing these visuals, I will try to show you how different Arab countries approach matchmaking bilingual scripts in signage, each influenced by its own culture and design history. These designs are in no way good or bad examples; they each have their qualities and flaws given the context and time of design. Observations about bilingual signs in Morocco: • The Arabic script is almost always based on a known calligraphic style (meaning: no invented Arabic letter forms). This practice is common in countries where graphic design is not prevalent and often involves hiring calligraphers for the task. This is a very good practice in my opinion, as it allows to match the authenticity of the Latin script. • Arabic signs that are handmade are mostly in Maghribi style, often matched with a Latin sans serif. This is a local preference coming from the history of the emergence of the Maghribi script in the region. • In most signs, there is an effort of matching the size and weight of both scripts, enhancing visual consistency. #BilingualSigns #CulturalDesign #Arabic #Lettering #Fonts #Calligraphy #Typography

Time lapse of the process of ‘brocess’ using play dough. This time I decided to design the letters in Maghribi style as the dough seemed like the ideal material for crafting low contrast letters with long extensions. Music: Lady fingers by Charbel Rouhana and the Beirut Oriental Ensemble, from the Album Hand Made

The focus of this month's brocess is the logo I designed for Wafeq in December 2022. Wafeq is a digital platform founded by my brother Nadim in 2019. It aims to address the financial and accounting needs of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Middle East. Wafeq's previous logo, featuring a Latin design with a prominent W icon, fell short of encapsulating the brand's true essence. The design directive was to improve the logo in a way that authentically mirrors the company's local roots and resonates with its target clientele. /ar #design #logo #branding #arabic #typography #customtype
