Trumpet pitcher plants (Sarracenia) are carnivorous North American perennials with modified, trumpet-shaped leaves that trap and digest insects, supplementing nutrients from poor soil. They lure prey with nectar and bright colors, using downward-pointing hairs and slippery surfaces to guide insects into a pool of digestive fluids. These plants require full sun, consistently moist soil (often sitting in water), and are excellent for bogs, rain gardens, or containers, but should not be fertilized.
