7even Tuinen, Wirtz International, Leuven, Belgium, 2012-2014 . The former Vander Elst cigar factory has been completely renovated. Where once the noise of machinery and the smell of tobacco reigned, there is now a green oasis in the heart of the city. The gardens are accessible from Tiensevest and Arnould Nobelstraat. Although they are connected, each has its own unique atmosphere and character. From Nobelstraat, you enter the large central courtyard. This courtyard stands out from the other gardens due to its central location and design. Raised Corten steel planters form a diagonal line leading to the various passages. A series of steps has been inserted between the planters and the basins to compensate for the differences in level. The planters are filled with ornamental grasses. The soft, delicate forms of the plants soften the sharp lines. From Tiensevest, you enter one of the small, intimate gardens surrounding the building. Various species of multi-trunk trees and shrubs accentuate the romantic character of the #garden . . L’ex fabbrica di sigari Vander Elst è stata completamente rinnovata. Daxi Port Lake Bay Child-Friendly Wetland Park, Tus-Design, Xinwu District, Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China, 2021-2022 . The park’s design, following the “child-friendly + ecology-first” philosophy, integrated the site’s natural elements. Various thematic ecological scenes were created, utilizing wetlands and diverse plant species, to create an educational and recreational space for children that fosters a connection with nature. The design team redeveloped the #park, integrating play areas and improving the circulation system, strengthening the relationship between people and nature. One of the main challenges in creating a community playground was appropriately integrating the most suitable features into the different sections. This included managing the site’s various elevation differences, preserving existing trees as much as possible, protecting original ecological features, and creating habitats for wildlife . . Il progetto del parco, seguendo la filosofia di “a misura di bambino + ecologia prima di tutto”, ha integrato gli elementi naturali del sito. Sono state create diverse scene ecologiche tematiche, utilizzando zone umide e diverse specie vegetali, per realizzare uno spazio educativo e ricreativo per i bambini che favorisca un legame con la natura. Il team di progettazione ha riqualificato il #parco, integrando aree gioco e migliorando il sistema di circolazione, rafforzando il rapporto tra uomo e natura. Una delle principali sfide nella creazione di un parco giochi per la comunità è stata quella di integrare in modo appropriato le funzioni più adatte nelle diverse sezioni. Utilizing the Rockaway Parks Conceptual Framework, the Multi-Purpose Area seamlessly integrates adjacent design vocabulary and links amenities along the Parkway. A gently rolling, expansive lawn invites moments of tranquility, accommodating pursuits such as yoga sessions and movie nights. For those seeking more active engagement, a dedicated recreational sand volleyball court, fitness equipment, and ping pong tables cater to individuals of diverse ages and abilities. Embracing sustainability, shade structures equipped with solar panels and charging ports offer respite, while the terrace seats, crafted from recycled plastic lumber, serve as ideal vantage points for spectators to enjoy dynamic volleyball matches. Additional amenities include oversized seating stones, benches, and drinking fountains . . Nirmal Van, Design Work Group, Kurel, India, 2024 . The idea was to create a villa in which all the different blocks, each with its own specific characteristics, did not interfere with one another. Therefore, a central living room, a dining room, and the bedrooms were designed to offer each magnificent view of the river and the internal courtyards. The house never fully reveals itself at once. The circulation is planned so that the spaces slowly unfold before the visitor as they journey through the house. From the small entrance pavilion to the expansive water courtyard, the main living room and dining room are designed as light glass boxes that fit into what appears to be a larger winter #garden and become one with the outdoor spaces. The swimming pool, positioned to obtain the most spectacular view of the sunset and the river, gives a sense of infinity . . L’idea era quella di creare una villa in cui tutti i diversi blocchi, con caratteristiche specifiche, non interferissero tra loro. Pertanto, un soggiorno centrale, una sala da pranzo e le camere da letto sono stati progettati in modo da offrire a ciascuno una magnifica vista sul fiume e sui cortili interni. In the historic gardens of the Singelberg Sculpture Park, within the industrial landscape of Katoen Natie, @arnequinze created The Rose Garden, a monumental sculptural world where nature, art, and philosophy come together. Arne Quinze drew inspiration from the rich tradition of European still-life painting, where the rose has long symbolized beauty, fragility, and transience. With this work, he wanted to move beyond the canvas and transform that symbolism into an immersive environment that visitors can physically enter. Layered aluminum forms unfold like oversized petals, while hand-crafted glass droplets mimic morning dew, recalling the luminous delicacy of the dew drops depicted in classical still-life paintings, such as Roses in a Glass Vase by Jacob van Hulsdonck. At its core, The Rose Garden is about diversity as a source of life, creativity, and resilience. Nature teaches us that strength lies not in uniformity, but in endless variation, where contrast and harmony coexist. What was once painted becomes physical. What was symbolic becomes experience. Jeju Lotte Hotel Renewal, BEOH, Seogwipo, South Korea, 2023 . The Lotte Hotel garden is a space where visitors can immerse themselves in Jeju’s unique nature and culture. Guests discover the true value of space in places where they can sense the intrinsic identity and dynamic vitality of the land. Consequently, the stage, which had long been a key feature of the hotel’s outdoor amenities, was dismantled and in its place the Primordial Garden was created, reconstructing the mystery of Jeju’s “gotjawal” (a local term for a dense, wild forest) through the language of the #garden. Guests will rediscover and connect with the beauty of nature by strolling along the paths that crisscross the reinterpreted gotjawal or entering hidden pavilions. The Primordial Garden offers visitors an unforgettable experience . . Il giardino del Lotte Hotel è uno spazio in cui i visitatori possono immergersi nella natura e nella cultura uniche di Jeju. Gli ospiti scoprono il vero valore di uno spazio in luoghi dove possono percepire l’identità intrinseca e la vitalità dinamica del territorio. El Portal de El Yunque, Marvel (Conceptual landscape design: EDSA), Río Grande, Puerto Rico, 2021 . Nestled within El Yunque National Forest, the visitor center has been thoughtfully transformed to honor the surrounding landscape and its history. Originally designed in 1996, the center suffered damage from Hurricanes Irma and María, prompting a renewal that reimagines its connection to nature and culture. The redesign incorporates a carefully integrated new arrival plaza, universally-accessible trails, local flora, and green infrastructure, seamlessly blending solar energy and water harvesting strategies. Visitors are welcomed into a vibrant, sustainable landscape that reflects Puerto Rico’s unique ecological and cultural heritage. The whole site is conceptualized as a series of habitats that represent El Yunque National Forest and the cultural landscapes that surround it. El Portal has become a mediator and interlocutor between nature and culture through the language of design . . Immerso nella foresta nazionale di El Yunque, il centro visitatori è stato sapientemente trasformato per onorare il paesaggio circostante e la sua storia. Central Park, GROUP A + MOSS (Makers of Sustainable Spaces), Utrecht, Netherlands, 2017-2021 . The 90-meter-high Central Park is named after the subtropical park that marks the 45 meter line. The two-storey indoor park is enclosed by a receding glass facade embracing the park like an undulating curtain. This is where employees come together to unwind, brainstorm or attend an event in a unique ecosystem overlooking the city. Scientific research has shown that plants have a positive effect on both our physical and mental condition. Plants increase productivity in the workplace by providing fresh air and reducing stress. The semipublic lush green park with workspace, meeting center and café offers an experience that contrasts with the office environment. A wooden deck path guides you through the “park” to seating areas embedded in green. The green design is inspired by flora of the Azores. The #garden includes over 50 trees and shrubs, 1,500 plants and even a babbling stream . . Il Central Park, alto 90 metri, prende il nome dal parco subtropicale che segna la linea dei 45 metri. Il parco interno a due piani è racchiuso da una facciata in vetro che lo avvolge come una tenda ondeggiante. È qui che i dipendenti s’incontrano per rilassarsi, fare brainstorming o partecipare a un evento in un ecosistema unico con vista sulla città. La ricerca scientifica ha dimostrato che le piante hanno un effetto positivo sia sul nostro stato fisico che mentale. Le piante aumentano la produttività sul posto di lavoro fornendo aria fresca e riducendo lo stress. Il lussureggiante parco verde semi-pubblico con spazi di lavoro, centro riunioni e caffetteria offre un’esperienza in contrasto con l’ambiente d’ufficio. Jardin Coursol by @fricheatelier One of the major challenges of the project lay in accessing the courtyard and the family room, requiring careful management of the different levels. This constraint provided the opportunity to create a discreet and fluid staircase, with a design nestled close to the vegetation within a wide, planted embankment. Corten steel plates structure landings and risers, lending a warm and enduring materiality that engages in a dialogue with the stone, brick, and living elements, while also recalling the industrial past of this part of the city, marked by the presence of the Lachine Canal and the railway industry. Cody Canal Park, Rogers Partners, Cody, Wyoming, USA, 2009 . This project sought to implement a process of natural recovery through a re-vegetation of the site. Native species have been tactically sown within the park grounds: topsoil depths, wind patterns, annual precipitation and natural and imposed systems of drainage and runoff provided a basis for zoning these plantings. Pedestrian paths weave through the #park, connecting the urban downtown grid with the recreational spaces, the library, and the upper steppe. The path of the original canal is highlighted by a bluegrass recreational lawn that takes advantage of the higher moisture content of the canal bed. This green swath contrasts with drought-tolerant native grasses planted on the surrounding slopes. The redesigned park marks the return of public events to this location . . Questo progetto mirava ad attuare un processo di recupero naturale attraverso una rigenerazione vegetale del sito. Le specie autoctone sono state seminate strategicamente all’interno del parco: la profondità del terreno, i modelli anemometrici, le precipitazioni annuali e i sistemi naturali e artificiali di drenaggio e deflusso superficiale fornirono la base per determinare la posizione delle piantagioni. Sentieri pedonali si snodano attraverso il #parco, collegando la griglia urbana con gli spazi ricreativi, la biblioteca e l’area a steppa. Il percorso del canale originale è evidenziato da un prato ricreativo di Poa che sfrutta il maggiore contenuto di umidità del letto del canale. Questa fascia verde contrasta con le erbe autoctone resistenti alla siccità piantate sui pendii circostanti.
