This album was such a joy to make. From those first conversations between @tom_elwin and @lanabode back in 2020, to the recording sessions guided by @ingenalexander , and then the creation of the art work in collaboration with @clareparkphoto , and @sezmond , and a wonderful essay from @lucybeewalker , and of course the support of @voces8foundation to release it to the world.

A very happy Lunar New Year to Chen Yi, a composer whose music I was delighted to come across when I returned to solo piano playing a few years ago. Dr Chen wrote this incredible set of variations during her first year at college in 1979. The theme is based on the Chinese folk song “Awariguli”, the name of a beautiful girl from the Uygur ethnic minority in Xinjiang. The music offers a flavourful fusion of Western and Chinese traditions, described by Dr Chen as “sometimes lyrical and transparent, sometimes powerful and dramatic.”
Jan Capinski and I had a great time recording this at the Milton Court Concert Hall a couple months ago.
