A few years ago at a photo social I met @visual_structures who me told me about his anti-social media app / art project @minutiae_app
I love photo books but I was skeptical that photos taken at random once a day based on a prompt could make a good book. But two years into it, I have to admit the result is a very personal and honest account. I just got my second book and I love it -bad photos and all.
Basically after 1 year of taking daily photos you can turn those ad hoc moments into a book -an uncurated of a year of your life.
Thereās no social media component. You can barely see the photos youāve taken, so it also becomes a project about memory.
Anyway, since then Martin and I become friends, and Iāve subjected many other friends and colleagues to being photographed at very random times.
@minutiae_app also letās you see photos of an anonymous stranger once a day, which sadly often features a lot of keyboards, outlets, and off kilter curtain rods around the world. But thereās a common humanity in that. Itās hard not to panic when you get the prompt to snap a photo in the next 5 seconds.

Goodbye winter! Your time here is done. Multiple snow storms, great. We lit candles, drank tea, went sledding on box lids, thank you, your is done. Officially looking for signs of spring now. The puffy coats needs a rest.

A silly video of two years of waiting for the elevator. Starting in May 2024: two springs, two summers, two autumns, and two winters. (Better with the sound on!)

Managed to make holiday cards again this year. Linoleum block print, two colors. I wish Iād captured the process a little better, but Iāve included my inspiration, a Dutch childrenās book from 1961 titled: A Thousand and One Laughs. I have no idea where I found the image, but Iāve had it saved for a decade. It makes me think of friendship and having a good convo. The style makes me think of Paul Rand.
Making mental note to experiment more with cut paper in 2026ā¦and to seek more silliness, more frienship, and laughter.

The making of our KPop Demon Hunters Halloween! š¹š¦ā⬠My little one was Sussie the magpie using black posterboard, and I was one of flight attendant demons from the start of the film using paper mache. Both costumes did require a ton of hot glue gun. My mask was still a little wet and I think I burned my fingers a few times, but it was worth it.
We met friends from @38ptabrooklyn on Dean and Pacific Street in Boerum Hill for candy, hot dogs and wholesome cuteness, meeting many Rumis along the way.

Teaching kids book cover design šš
1. Read the book, 2. Sketch thumbnails of many different cover ideas, 3. Get feedback / discuss what concept most resonates, 4. Sketch out the winning concept, then 5. Go to final exploring colors and typography.
Just like at @protototodesignlab , sketching and brainstorming are always a part of process to lead us to the strongest ideas.
Sidewalk Flowers originally illustrated by @sydneydraws , A Girl Named Hillary and A Girl Named Misty were originally illustrated by @melissa_kashiwagi , and A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo was illustrated by @egkellerdraws ātalented artists who inspired our young designers.
(The Marlon Bundo āredesignā sketch was my example for the kids)

While waiting to secure a commercial lease for @protototodesignlab Iāve been running a weekly design club and school-holiday camps at home. Whether weāre doing 2D or 3D design challenges we always sketch first, and we discuss who is it for (audience/client) and our intention. Itās never more than 6 kids and we always make space for play, friendship and lots of snacks.
Our little dog, Pickles, is always seated by someoneās foot. We listen to music and tell silly stories while working, just like in any good studio.

Visited #ArtOnPaper2025 and loved seeing work by @iamroseblake , @remstudio_telluride , and @iam_daveeggers / @electricworks The artists books in the BookSmart section in partnership with @centerforbookarts were enough to make the visit to Pier 36 worth it.
-Rose Blake also illustrated the books Great Exhibition and Meet the Artist: David Hockney @iamroseblake , represented by @rebeccahossackartgallery
-Rebecca Messierās threads on paper were stunning, beautiful, delicate and tactile, in the vein of Agnes Martin @remstudio_telluride represented by @fringegallerytelluride
-Miniature pop up book by Lauren Simkin Berke @lsberke
-Other artist books from the Center for Book Artsās table @centerforbookarts
(Not pictured, but very charming: Linda Hanauerās artist books @lindahanauerhandmade )
