âThe Art of Foleyâ workshop ran by @colourcollider and I at @taco_yap_yippeeee in August.
Using a wide range of materials the children created sonic narratives, acting out the various sounds within their created film scenes.
We worked at multiple stations : footsteps, wet sounds, movement and specific sounds. Together with the children we experimented with the a wide range of materials including watermelon , hay, rice, rubber gloves, celery and much more!
Lots of fun,
Thank you @taco_yap_yippeeee for having us. Look forward to the next one!
Instrument-making workshop for @createontheestate , led by myself and @bodie.stanley
Together we designed and then built instruments using household recyclables and food. After this we held several recording sessions where the kids could have a jam with their instruments both solo and in collaboration.
Swipe to last slide to listen!
Key points behind the workshop:
- Learning the sonic qualities of the materials
-Learning how to utilise and combine the materials to create interesting sound textures
- Listening with greater sensitivity
- Musical collaboration skills
A lot of fun!
âSoundscape composition and painting in response to soundâ - WORKSHOP
This workshop was for @createontheestate , led by myself and @bodie.stanley
The children worked collaboratively to build a live soundscape, using a collection of my field recordings. Layering them on top of an ambient music piece I made for the workshop.
Simultaneously, another group made a collaborative painting in response to the soundscape they were hearing.
Aims of the workshop :
Deepening our ability to listen and decipher what weâre hearing
Experimenting with the layering of sound and how this creates shifts in mood / atmosphere
The layering of sound to create a scene
Expand our awareness of the sounds around us
Learning to work in collaboration and respond to the others
Skip to the last slide to listen to a snippet of the soundscape!
âNostalgiaâ A film by @yani.zwave , Soundtrack by me.
Monologue written by me, read by Jingwei Zhang
Actor @mel_mailisu
The film is about a Japanese author now living in London, struggling to find inspiration in a city that feels cold and very foreign to her.
âMeaning/lessâ is an on-going series of workshops exploring communication outside of language. The workshops consist of various non-sensical vocal exercises and collaborative writing. The intention behind the workshops is to investigate what happens when we untie expression from an intended âmeaningâ. Language is useful for many things but in my experience it can be constricting in terms of finding new ways of relating to eachother and ourselves, and venturing into new realms of experience.
Some key points:
Challenging the notion that the âmeaninglessâ cannot be significant.
Investigating the âmeaninglessâ means stepping outside of our familiar frameworks of knowledge
Moving into new, deeper modes of attention , beyond the binaries of sense and non-sense
Meaning arises in the mode of attention, rather than the content of oneâs experience
Collective exploration of the unknown

âListening Pieceâ (2022)
Installation
Sound piece duration : 46 minutes
Plywood, MDF, Reconstituted foam, Speakers
I made this sound Installation for the Central Saint Martins 2022 Degree show. This piece came as part of the progression from the sound workshops I lead. The workshops focus on the exploration of sound without âmeaningâ. The soundscape in the dome was made only using recordings from these workshops.
Similarly the soundscape heard in the dome doesnât aim at proposing a meaning, it doesnât aim to propose itself to be anything other than what it is. The idea is to focus the participant on the materiality of the sound itself. The emphasis is on oneâs experience of the sound rather than oneâs interpretation of it - proposing that meaning lies in the mode of attention rather than the content of oneâs experience.
Thank you to everyone who came to see the show!
DM me for any enquiries to house, exhibit or use the sound dome.
