‘Floodgate’ A short film shot over a few blustery days on the North Yorkshire Coast in November 2025. Directed by Sioda Adams

This enjoyable short called for a fun excursion to the town of Whitby and a whistle stop tour of the surrounding coast. The grey skies and rugged coastline made for a good backdrop to the film’s exploration of postpartum depression, spearheaded by a great performance from Jessica Ransom.

The majority of the film was shot on a fairly remote country road and in and around an old VW Golf. This meant Carolina and I had the challenge of lighting night exterior shots mainly on battery power, desperately trying to pull detail out of the vast field in the back of every shot. Standard arsenal of small LED’s did the job in the car whilst a neat flashlight/bounce rig (accredited to harry) allowed us to practically light our actor whilst still giving Carolina room to manoeuvre. Despite the rain and wind, I have pleasant memories of anxiously checking how our instagrid was holding up to power two 750w parcans, doubling as car headlights, or checking Harry hadn’t collapsed from the cold.
Second time working with Carolina was a joy, I always appreciate her keen eye and ability to deny anyone turning over before we’ve all had time to do our jobs right, particularly me.
Plenty of wonderful shots I can’t take much credit for, particularly from the surreal dream-bathtub-beach sequence, or the scenes of Jessica having to brave the North Sea for minutes at a time. I asked Harry to prep some Astera tubes in waterproof housings for this, largely for posterity but mostly to give him an excuse to get in his waders and get mucky.
Utmost thanks to Harry
@harry_rollinson for working really hard and helping with my Astera app illiteracy. The incentives for him to come along consisted of being quite cold and wet, a six hour drive and sharing a room with me. How I managed to lure him up remains a mystery.
Many thanks to
@greenkitlondon for being ever so accommodating and providing essential battery
solutions.
