The moment you decide to put someone on camera and let them speak, the interview becomes a critical creative decision for the production.
These are frames from the film we worked on called First Light, a documentary shot in Svalbard, Norway. Swipe through and youâll see a miner at the rubble of his childhood home, lit by arctic golden hour. A pastor placed inside her church so the fresco becomes part of her frame. An artist set inside her own gallery, surrounded by her work. A resident in her home during the end of polar night sharing thoughts on the first sunrise of the year. Every setup is intentional. The interview isnât an afterthought. Itâs part of the story.
This thinking translates directly to branded work. Testimonials, brand films, founder stories, etc. If youâre going to show the interview, make it intentional. A poorly lit, lazily framed talking head creates doubt, even when the message is strong.
The b-roll matters too. Notice how each subjectâs coverage pulls from the world they actually live in. The interview and the b-roll are always in conversation with each other.
Does interview quality register for you when youâre watching branded content? Or am I the only one! Because the brands that treat it with intention, their content feels more connected, more intentional, more like something worth watching.

when kris first told me he and the boys were going to the northernmost settlement in the world to make a documentary a few years ago, i thought they were nuts. they may all still be so, but now theyâre nuts with a truly incredible doc to show for it - and i couldnât be more proud of them.
iâm so grateful to have had the pleasure of watching First Light evolve from an aspiration into an inspiring and powerful piece of work. so excited to see where this thing goes from here and for whatever else they and @bluehour bring to life!
Still looking back on this magical night. A sold out premiere of First Light in NYC, surrounded by friends, family, and colleagues. I canât put into words how much it means to release this project to the world. After three years of work, the message and story behind this project landed just the way we hoped. Itâs a love letter to the Arctic. A chance to escape to the edge of the world and to understand the lessons that come with that. We couldnât have done it without everyone involved who put countless hours of hard work bringing this film to life.
