A few weeks ago I posted an IG story about doing a limited fan tuan drop. Some of you came out to support and taste a little nostalgia. Others quietly criticized my technical execution behind the anonymity of social media.
The story behind fan tuan, for me, goes back to childhood — growing up in a quiet, often parentless house. My mom worked graveyard shifts, so on many nights I had to fend for myself. I’d grab a plastic bag, a dry towel, and whatever pantry staples we had, then wrap myself a fan tuan with leftover pot rice.
Traditionally it’s made with sticky rice — and if you want to get nit picky, long-grain sticky rice. But fan tuan was also born from convenience, leftovers, and working-class survival. In our house there were slices of Oscar Mayer bologna. Sometimes stale croissants instead of you tiao.
In fact, I didn’t have a “proper” fan tuan until a summer visit to Taiwan when I was 22.
Does that make me less Taiwanese because I can’t recount some nostalgic street stall of yore? Is what I made less valid because mine was often just a messy deconstruction of rice and pickles?
I don’t cook to gain accolades or position myself as an authority on any cuisine. Cooking — for a lot of us — is vulnerability. It’s memory, improvisation, identity, and artistic expression all tangled together.

Right now Mother’s Day feels weirdly like a second birthday that includes a tiny human who also wants to blow out the candles too. I can’t wait for the day when my daughter starts making me (bad) macaroni art and understands that it’s not Easter or a birthday but a day where she gets to spend a little time with mom. Happy Mother’s Day to those who observe it and thanks to all the people out there taking on the big task of parenting!
May is #aapiheritagemonth but honestly we celebrate #aapi community everyday here. Lots going on for us in May including Mother’s Day and my 40th 🎂🫣‼️ We’re so fortunate to have members of press stop by (thank you @plcpeggy ‼️) in April including Oscar from @missionlocal who took these lovely photos and wrote a generous piece introducing us to their readership. I’m especially grateful for our regulars (lol it’s still so surreal to say that I have “regulars”) who show up most days for *this and that* and a little chat. 🙏 🩷💓💞

Someone in the neighborhood filed a 311 complaint that our 2790a Harrison Street location was vacant. That complaint was passed onto 2 departments who came by and asked whether our store was open. To the person who filed the complaint: we have limited hours because it’s just me running the whole shop. We don’t have signs yet because we still haven’t figured out what to paint on the walls. We’re here Tuesday-Saturday starting 10am. I hope you come by for a onigiri or matcha — I’d love to meet you.

my new series- bakers day off 👩🏻🍳
ep 1 - visiting @konbinisf
emily and I went to high school together and it’s been over 20 years! so cool to see what she has been up to and the space she has created. when I first started ap flour, I didn’t know anyone who was going the entrepreneurial route and now I am so happy to have connected with so many amazing makers and founders in the food/bev space! my hope with this series is to amplify small local businesses and share my love for food, my city and my friends. building something from scratch is hard and i want to help others while i am doing the damn thing too 😄
follow @apfloursf for more behind the scenes and the latest 🍪 drops!

Coming back to the city for the second time with the heritage line: flavors I grew up eating for its bold, complex flavors, topped on thick, triple-strained yogurt found in yogurt cafes throughout Korea.
