And they rebuilt anyway.

After the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, the Greenwood community didn't just survive. They refused to leave. They rebuilt from nothing, with nothing, so that the next generation could also know what it felt like to belong somewhere.
And it worked.
Because as Kode reminds us — "To this day, people come to see Black Wall Street. They’re not coming just to see a few buildings."

Tulsa changed me.
During the Main Street Conference, I had the privilege of participating in the Greenwood Griot walking tour—and the knowledge shared about the Greenwood District… it brought me to tears.
Not just because of what was lost.
But because of what existed.
Greenwood wasn’t just history.
It was a thriving Black business ecosystem.
Ownership. Circulation of dollars. Excellence. Community.
And even after the Tulsa Massacre…
what stood out to me wasn’t just the tragedy—
It was the resilience.
The decision to rebuild.
To continue.
To believe in possibility despite everything.
There’s a difference between a bee and a fly.
One looks for what’s broken.
The other finds what can be built.
Greenwood is a reminder of what’s possible when Black businesses are supported, resourced, and rooted in community.
And for me, this experience wasn’t just educational—
it was transformational.
As a business owner, I left with a deeper responsibility…
to not just build for today, but to contribute to something that lasts.
To help create ecosystems.
To support ownership.
To lay groundwork for future generations.
Because we’ve already seen what’s possible.
Now it’s on us to build it again.
