In the ‘Lost Family’ series, I create complex and striking compositions using my own, larger scale photographs and small photographs from my family albums. I leave important parts of a black and white photograph intact and overpaint the rest of the image with flowers, referencing my name (“Gulnara” means “flower of pomegranate”) and that of my mother’s name, Rose, as well as symbolizing my “fantasy” life. As I cull through formal and personal photographs, I raise questions about how to represent what is hidden, deferred, or denied. In my attempts to find a photographic-artistic language to address death, mourning, remembering, and reparation, I draw on my own lived experiences while simultaneously inviting audiences to discover their own reflections and resonances.

Why are our prints 14” x 11” (sheet size)?
For the Klompching Editions, we determined the scale of the artworks with some very careful consideration. These editions are, in some respects, an entry point to collecting original art. They’re also a great way to acquire an artwork, where the regular edition is perhaps too large in scale, above one’s budget, or a unique piece that has been sold.
By producing editions at a small scale, the pricing is subsequently inexpensive, making a purchase less intimidating and opening up opportunities for you to acquire a print outside your usual parameters. The scale also keeps the cost of framing low.
That said, the scale also needed to be large enough, that each print functions as a fine art object—not so small that details and visual impact are lost.
Oh, and with scale and affordability; they make great gifts!
