The "one, one thousand…" solo exhibition is coming to Boulder May 17th, 10 am!! My sister
@lorisandler and I will be guest speakers at the Pine Street Church’s non-denominational service, discussing our intimate portrait of maternal devotion and familial love.
Lori is a single parent and lifelong caregiver to her son, David, who has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a rare, incurable epilepsy, and severe autism. I bear witness to her life behind closed doors, revealing the continual challenge of being okay when things clearly are not. At 32, my nephew remains an enigma in his silence. For years, I’ve wondered if he journeys to ethereal realms beyond his seized and contorted body, safe and free from the pain and fear I imagine he endures. We have been told he is a spiritual healer, which gives me comfort that his life experience may be grander than what we see. The project title echoes Lori’s practice of counting the length of David's seizures.
What began as a conventional black-and-white documentary has evolved into a multidisciplinary, surreal exploration that seeks to give form to the unknown. I work across collage, cyanotype, filmmaking, and mixed media, using hand-cut colored gel stencils on a light table, archival photographs, and Lori's handwritten text.
The installation includes traditional photographic prints, large-scale silk and denim prints, sculptural works, and a short film. Listen to the audio recordings of Lori’s writings on her website (lorisandler.com); it’ll break your heart, but it’ll break it open. ♥️
