Exhibition Opening: May 17, 10 am Off Broadway Gallery, Pine Street Church 1237 Pine Street, Boulder, CO one, one thousand…. is an intimate testament to the countless unseen caregivers and loved ones they support. This family love story offers a window into the lifelong challenges and wonders of the artist’s sister, Lori Sandler, and her nonverbal nephew, David. Debe Arlook (@debearlook ) combines traditional and alternative photography, film, sculptural installation, Lori’s handwritten text, and mixed media to understand their inner and outer worlds, prompted by David’s rare, incurable epilepsy and severe autism. The project title echoes Lori’s practice of counting the length of each seizure. Debe and Lori will be guest speakers at the Church's nondenominational service beginning at 10am. Lori will speak on the courage of caregiving, and Debe will introduce the project and lead an exhibition walk-through. David's Song" will be performed by Peter Sandler, the composer and David's brother. Reception and exhibit walk-through at 11am

The "one, one thousand…" solo exhibition is coming to Boulder May 17th, 10 am!! My sister @lorisandler and I will be guest speakers at the Pine Street Church’s non-denominational service, discussing our intimate portrait of maternal devotion and familial love. Lori is a single parent and lifelong caregiver to her son, David, who has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a rare, incurable epilepsy, and severe autism. I bear witness to her life behind closed doors, revealing the continual challenge of being okay when things clearly are not. At 32, my nephew remains an enigma in his silence. For years, I’ve wondered if he journeys to ethereal realms beyond his seized and contorted body, safe and free from the pain and fear I imagine he endures. We have been told he is a spiritual healer, which gives me comfort that his life experience may be grander than what we see. The project title echoes Lori’s practice of counting the length of David's seizures. What began as a conventional black-and-white documentary has evolved into a multidisciplinary, surreal exploration that seeks to give form to the unknown. I work across collage, cyanotype, filmmaking, and mixed media, using hand-cut colored gel stencils on a light table, archival photographs, and Lori's handwritten text. The installation includes traditional photographic prints, large-scale silk and denim prints, sculptural works, and a short film. Listen to the audio recordings of Lori’s writings on her website (lorisandler.com); it’ll break your heart, but it’ll break it open. ♥️ Off Broadway Gallery, Pine Street Church, 1237 Pine Street, Boulder, CO 10 am Artist Performance @Petersandler “David’s Song” @lorisandler speaks on “The Courage of Caregiving” 11 am Reception & Artist Walk-thru with me On view May 14 - July 31, 2026 . . . #bouldercoloradoart #mixedmedia_photography #abstractphotography #debearlookprojects #oneonethousandproject #beingokwhenitsnotokay #unconventionaldocumentary #familycaregiversupport #lennoxgastautsyndrome #socialdocumentary #autismspeaks #spiritualgrowth #seizuredisorder #epilepsy #longtermcare #findacure #neurodiverse #raredisease #motherslove #mothersday

Printing and framing new work for a solo exhibition of “one, one thousand…” opening on May 17 at the Off Broadway Gallery in Boulder, Colorado. The project is a portrayal of my sister’s devotion to her son, David, a nonverbal man, living with a rare, incurable form of epilepsy, severe autism and scoliosis. I bear witness to Lori’s solo caregiving journey of struggle and grace, where she’s repeatedly given opportunities to be okay when things are definitely not okay. The title is inspired by Lori’s words as she counts the duration of each seizure. Since 2020, this different kind of love story has evolved from a black-and-white photo documentary into a three-dimensional experience that combines alternative photography, mixed-media techniques, filmmaking and sculpture. Because we don’t know what David thinks, sees, or feels, I wonder where he “goes” because he doesn’t seem to be “here.” We’ve been told he is a healer working on other planes. My work attempts to journey into these dimensions in search of David. Lori, an essayist, speaker, and coach for parents of neurodiverse children, contributes handwritten text that describes her experience. Our collaboration is a testament of the countless unseen caregivers and loved ones they care for. #oneonethousand…project #conceptualphotography #conceptualart #debearlookprojects #familycaregiver #neurodivergenceawareness #epilepsyawareness #lennoxgastautsyndrom #autismawareness #socialdocumentary #bouldercoloradoart #offbroadwaygallery #mixedmediasocialart #bouldercoloradoart #freestylephoto #milehighframing #lorisandler #canon #fujifilmxt100

I am thrilled to be exhibiting my long term project “one, one thousand…” our family story about life long care and the one being cared for. My sister, @lorisandler is the most remarkable person and strongest person I know. My nephew David is diagnosed with a rare, incurable, difficult to control epilepsy disorder. He is non-verbal, has severe autism and scoliosis. At 31 years old, we don’t know what he thinks, sees or feels. My work is an attempt to understand him, to give him a voice and be a witness to my sister’s behind closed doors life. Our story is but one of miIlions of stories around the world. In honor of Women’s History Month, Donna Cosentino @thephotographerseyecollective gallerist curated Mother/Child, a three-woman exhibition. Donna’s vision brought @michelezousmerphoto @christinas_reflections and me together spotlighting the love and care between mother and child. #debearlookprojects #fineartphotography #unconventionaldocumentary #familycaregiver #photobasedphotography #thephotographerseyecollective #epilepsyawareness💜#lennoxgastautsyndrome #lennoxgastautsyndromeawareness #lorisandler
