Cover Reveal 💛 say hello to Cartoons, my collection of stories & drawings, forthcoming from City Lights @citylightsbooks on May 21, 2024. . . . I got to make the cover for this one, and if you look closely [slide 2], I think you'll see that it's a fairly accurate self-portrait... . . . . Here is the publisher's description of the book: Set in the uncanny valley between Bugs Bunny and Franz Kafka, Cartoons is an explosive series of outrageous, absurdist tales. More than simply a book, Cartoons proposes itself as a genre of imaginary writing in opposition to the realism of most contemporary U.S. fiction, aligning itself with the French symbolism and Latin American fabulism its author is known to translate. A giant cricket with a tiny Kit Schluter in a jar, The Girl Who Is a Piece of Paper, an umbrella who confuses the words porpoise and purpose in its quest for self-fulfillment, these are just a few denizens of its pages, suffused with a fairy tale-like animism. A pair of slugs go on a bender. A microwave oven decries microaggressions. A beer bottle is filled with regret. An escalator mechanic’s shoe conceals a terrible secret. As befits its title, Cartoons defies the laws of physics and fiction alike, eschewing tonal consistency in favor of a simultaneity of joy and horror, ecstasy and disgust, wrapped in an extravagant layer of black humor. The stories blur the boundary between microfiction and poet’s prose, featuring impossible transformations and surrealistic events, even as they wrestle with urgent psychic and moral dilemmas. Heightening the atmosphere of pervasive unreality are a number of drawings by the author, which don’t so much illustrate as parallel the tales with their own fantastic scenarios. #CityLights #citylightsbooks #cartoons #KitSchluter #contemporaryfiction #poetry #contemporarypoetry #illustration #capnjazz #microfiction #marquisdesade #donuts

Out on April 20 from @inpatient_press , my translation of Copi's novel THE QUEENS' BALL (1977), with an afterword & notes by Copi's current French editor, Thibaud Croisy @thibaud.croisy (tr. @oliviabaes ). Link in bio. Available en masse at the upcoming New York Art Book Fair @printedmatter_artbookfairs . . . "Truly nasty work. Iconic." — @julianahuxtable . . "Here is crime à la française. Here is a great queen's verbal aggression, radiant detail, and joyous destructive energy." —Robert Glück . . Although hugely influential in France and Latin America — so much so that César Aira published a book-length study on his work — this is legendary author/playwright/cartoonist Copi's first novel to be translated into English, and the beginning of a larger project I'm undertaking to translate more of his output. Copi (1939, Buenos Aires -1987, Paris) is truly an experience—raucous, irreverent, campy, hilarious, and yet, underneath all the play, seismic and emotionally arresting in his social commentary. An all-time favorite. Just look at those pictures of him.

OUT TODAY from the great @actionbooks 🦇: a reissue of my 2015 translation of Jaime Saenz's 1967 serial poem "The Cold" alongside @ted_dodson 's truly lush version of Saenz's previously untranslated "Death at the Very Touch" from 1957 (what a title): The edition features an introduction by Bolivian poet & Saenz scholar @materialismo_onirico . With much respect to Forrest Gander and the late Kent Johnson for first blazing this path and welcoming Saenz's mystical work into English; thanks to everyone at Action, @hiwaterpress for the gorgeously nocturnal acidic cover, and the now-disbanded Poor Claudia, who first published "The Cold" when we were just kids. . . If you are interested in reviewing this one, drop me a line.
