We said goodbye to my dad last week. Lauren and I have been here in Virginia with our mom, at my dad’s side for his last days, and now making arrangements and thinking about him a lot. He was so strong and smart, but also so laidback and funny and cool. Everyone loved to be around him. He lived a huge life full of accomplishments, and had many passions, but he was so humble that many of his friends from one area of his life wouldn’t know of all the amazing things he’d done or skills he’d honed in other areas. When you lived as big a life as he did, you didn’t need to talk much. One little example: as long as I’ve known him, he played guitar every day, but he never sought opportunities to perform. He just played for the joy of it, and he was always working through another guitar book, or telling me about a new record he found that he was excited about. After his cancer diagnosis, I brought a suitcase full of recording equipment home for Christmas and recorded him playing in our living room. When I sent him the recording, of course he didn’t immediately send it to everyone he knew (like I would have). As far as I know, he didn’t share it with anyone. So I figured I’d blast it for him here. Here’s my dad playing Duane Allman’s “Little Martha” on his acoustic guitar.
