Mama Na ❤️
This project is a film and photographic collection exploring the many roles my mother embodied throughout my childhood. Through staged reenactments, I revisit these characters to capture their
emotional weight and examine how they have consciously and unconsciously shaped my
understanding of care, responsibility, and human connection.
The Carer is the first vignette of this series, rooted in tenderness, safety, and emotional presence. My mum has constantly been a bedrock of genuine care and love.
I picked a random VN from our many WhatsApp conversations to overlay this vignette. The song “Kulu” by N’Gou Bagayoko reminds me of the Hausa lullabies I’d often hear my mum sing to me.
Shot in restrained, singular frames inspired by studio portraiture, the work treats memory as
something embodied rather than recalled - using movement, objects, and ritual to translate lived
experience into image. Together, these characters form a composite portrait of Mama Na as layered, intentional, and deeply influential, revealing how these roles continue to shape the way I move through and relate to the world.
I love you Mum ❤️
