A year ago I got to marry my favorite person on the planet. We had an amazing day full of love and joy. Especially grateful to our families for their support, and everyone in our orbit who showed up for us that day and continues to do so as time unfolds. Layaway Appreciation Post Part ✌️of ✌️
Next up we head to Indianapolis, the new home of Caitlin Clark and the @indyfilmfest . I had the pleasure of screening a film there years ago and was blown away by this gem of a fest. The programming, staff, and diversity of content all created an unparalleled inspiring atmosphere. This is one to keep a pulse on and support, visit indyfilmfest.org!
Then I’ll be traveling out to Chicago for none other than the Cinema Femme Short Film Festival. @ebbcinemaflow has lovingly built an environment for female and non-binary filmmakers to feel celebrated and thrive together. Please give @cinemafemmemagazine a follow to watch this special festival and organization continue to grow. I’m deeply honored to be screening alongside these filmmakers, and with Layaway’s own Stevie aka @bridgetfrancesharris and her own film @placesofworshipshortfilm . And lastly, celebrating our win this month at @crfilmfestival ! We walked away with the honor of winning the Gold Eddy for Student Short in Cedar Rapids. I was on set and unable to attend but we were well represented by our Casting Director and Locations Manager aka, yes, my supportive parents John and Kimberly. It takes a village and they’ve always been the presidents of that village for me. Layaway is an Iowa born and bred film, so to come home and share this labor of love with the place that inspired it (and me as a filmmaker) means a great deal. Big thanks to @freese.ericdean and the CRIFF staff, plus big congrats for another great year of celebrating Iowa connected films!
And real talk, here’s the thing…the festival circuit can be one of the most inspiring places in the world. And it can also be one of the most challenging as a filmmaker submitting to these fests. It’s a vulnerable act. There’s so much talent out there and only so many programming spots. I’ve learned that it’s so important to celebrate the wins with a full and open heart. Layaway Appreciation Post Part ☝️of ✌️
Sharing some moments from Layaway to celebrate an exciting lineup of festivals this month! Please buckle up while I take the time to honor each festival and share some thoughts.
First up, this weekend we’ll be screening at the wonderful Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival! Located in one of my all time favorite cities at a venue and festival we couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of. MSPIFF is one of those fests that you hear about as a filmmaker growing up next door in Iowa. It’s been a dream landing spot for one of my films for years. Wild respect for the @mspfilmsociety and all that they do. Then southbound we go. We’re so happy to be screening at @riverrunfilm in Winston-Salem! This is my chance to give a mega shoutout to my post-production producing collaborator and pal @swanson.kai , who has roots in North Carolina and will be repping us. Kai has been a driving force for Layaway’s post journey and festival run, so lucky to have her as a partner in fest crime. River Run is a one of a kind fest that has been on my radar for years. Next up we have a festival that’s near and dear to my heart, the @julienfilmfest . This is a fest I grew up attending. It helped to inspire my path in film in many ways. What Susan Gorrell has manifested and built in Dubuque is amazing. It’s been such a genuine joy to see JDIFF grow and get the deserved acclaim that is has over the years, helping to put the Iowa film fest scene on the map.
