‘BIRD’ - Andrea Arnold One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was being involved in the R&D for the 8ft fully articulated feathered wing suit worn by Franz Rogowski. Myself, @rajsfx & @becky_the_mua figured out the mechanics of the wings to ensure they’d extend & retract smoothly whilst maintaining the natural movement of a real Marsh Harrier. To replicate real feathers, we crafted our own using ostrich quills & silk fabrics, raking them with gesso to create delicate ridges. Each wing consisted of nearly 50 feathers, aka 28 hand crafted & an upper row of 20 real feathers! Given the immense wingspan & weight, we opted for a modular, removable design. Snap fasteners secured the main wings to the bodysuit, allowing for easy attachment & removal to keep Franz comfortable during breaks. The final stage involved intricately dyeing & artworking feathers to create panels that would seamlessly blend with the rest of the wings. Thankfully having an avid bird enthusiast such as @rajsfx with you for the ride meant being in extremely good hands 🪶 It was truly magical to witness Franz fully embody the character with amazing physicality and grace. So wonderful to see that ‘Golda’ has made the shortlist for Makeup & Hair at the 96th Academy Awards! A huge congrats to all the amazing nominees shortlisted this year 👏🏼👏🏼 Thank you once again to @suzbat for having me on this whirlwind adventure with you and the @redgirlfx team ♥️ The full set of prosthetics used for Helen’s makeup consisted of cheeks, nose, neck and eyebags. The pieces were run as soft as possible at 300% (except the nose at 120%) which made the prosthetics move so naturally with Helen’s own skin. We also used a little old age stipple to blend and age her. @suzbat and I applied Helen’s prosthetic makeup for the duration of the shoot, with Helen sitting with us for 2 hours every morning and a further 20 minutes for the wig and eyebrow application by @karen_hartley_thomas and @nettgray . Overall we did 30 applications on Helen, who was so wonderfully patient and kind throughout.
