Myself, @kb.fx and @becky_the_mua , had the fun task of working out how to make wings that could articulate, be correctly proportioned for a grown adult and withstand a fight scene.
Creating the largest set of feathers involved a fair bit of trial and error but the final result was created using ostrich quills sandwiched between two different types of fabric. They were then treated with a gesso mix to add some light rigidity, this also allowed us to create subtle striation patterns on each feather. The vest majority of the large feathers were looked after by beck while Ashra put her brain to engineering and fabrication and I played with different feathering and painting techniques.
For Andrea’s style of filming, it was an absolute live safer to have wings that could be put on detached very quickly and with minimal disruption on set.

‘Bird’ directed by Andrea Arnold.
Honestly one of my favourite projects to have worked on so far in my career.
Working with the amazing @redgirlfx team, the task was to create a makeup and set of wings for a bird transformation, (inspired by the marsh harrier)
Myself, @kb.fx and @becky_the_mua made up the main wing team. There was a lot of trials, errors and general experimentation to work out how the mechanics would work, what martial would be best and generally how the fuck to make a massive set of wings but I’m honestly so proud of what me managed to archive. It was such a pleasure working so closely with these guys and I also really appreciate the trust @suzbat had in us on this one.
There were so many parts to this makeup (and a few that unfortunately didn’t make the final cut) and whole team worked there arses off and smashed it!!
Also have to shout out the wonderful @ffffranz who was an absolute dream to work with.
