Wistful summer heartbreak tune from my favorite frat boy singer. While Wallen’s music exemplifies the death of harmonic motion that has overtaken Top 40 country music, the winsome sweetness of the verse’s major 7 chords, coupled with the naturalistic setting of the song’s narrative of lost love, makes this tune a favorite of mine. In some ways, the song’s lack of harmonic movement reflects and reinforces the narrative of wondering about a love long past: with no new experiences to draw on and no possibility of this love persisting, the protagonist sifts thru memories frozen in time, able to access the Other only thru projection, adrift permanently in a sea of unknowing, stuck forever in the same few notes and chords. Plus (and this is perhaps most important) he is handsome.
One of many songs I arranged that didn’t end up on my new record of covers for one reason or another.
