I’m extremely excited for the opening of my first exhibition in Poland this week, in beloved Wroclaw of all places, which happens to be one of the locations I grew up in and around. I was raised in the periphery of the city, a small village that continues to be the sacred center of my art practice, exactly eighteen years to the day I left as a clueless, delusional yet fearless eighteen-year-old child. ❖ All the Diamonds Wernisaż: 15.05 Wystawa czynna: 16.05–5.07 ⌔ Zespół kuratorski: @nbarczynska , Maria Bîrsan @brssi , @alexandru._niculescu @monikaluszpak_skiba ⌔ Organizatorzy: @krupa_art_foundation @sandwich.gallery ⌔ Partnerzy: @rumunski_instytut_kultury @muzeulnationaldearta ⌔ identyfikacja wizualna @magdalena_jaskulka

Upset The Rhythm is emerging from its live-music winter hibernation… Next Tuesday (Jan 20th) we will be upping sticks to Theatreship for the first time. Theatreship is a historic cargo boat moored in Canary Wharf, that just happens to be an amazing, intimate arts venue! We have the dazzling Susannah Stark & Band headlining this show, with Karolina Lebek and Ecka Mordecai turning in spirited performances alongside. If you enjoy evocative soundscapes, ritualistic poetry and entwined folk textures, we’ve got you covered - this promises to be a very special genre-fluid evening aboard a floating vessel. We even have Katie Shannon (NTS) DJ-ing through the night too, sublime times. We hope you can join us. See you there! UTR x @earlywater88 @karolinalebek @ecka_mordecai @katieshannon23 @night_school @apostolos_kasparis @theatreship

🌟🔊⚡️ Artist focus @karolinalebek who will play on Sunday 26th Oct. At @thehorsehospital a fundraising event for @resonancefm and @resonanceextra Karolina Lebek is an artist and musician based between London and Wroclaw, working across a range of media including video, photography, installation and live performance. Her practice, exploring interests in consciousness, ecology and mental health, gives new form to the exploration of the sacred, the ritual and the body, in context of geological time. Concerned with generational trauma, histories of migration and displacement, and the intersections between human artefacts, psychology, and ancestral knowledge, her work embraces a poetry of decay and transformation that rearranges history to shed new light on the present.

On the first day of Memories of Water, Memories of Air, we premiered Karolina Łebek’s new film installation sanare. The 4K moving image work invites viewers into a meditative loop of memory, loss, and healing — rooted in personal and collective histories of displacement. Set against the backdrop of Krynica Zdrój and Łemko heritage, sanare reflects on ancestral trauma and the quiet rituals of reconnection, both spiritual and physical. A poetic journey back to a silenced language, a lost home, and the healing power of water. Thank you, @karolinalebek , for sharing this intimate and powerful work with us. On the first night of Memories of Water, Memories of Air, step into Karolina Łebek’s deeply moving sanare — a powerful 4K video installation premiering in Venice. Rooted in personal memory and collective history, sanare revisits a formative journey undertaken by @karolinalebek in 1996 to Krynica Zdrój — formerly a Łemko village called Krzenycze — in the Low Beskids of the Carpathian Mountains. Krynica (from Polish: source), celebrated for its mineral water springs, fresh air and mountain views, is now the site of one of the largest Polish sanatoria, a type of medical spa providing space for communal convalescence and rest. The core and the foundation of healing treatments and rituals available in Krynica Zdrój remains the act of drinking mineral waters from five active springs. Thus, sanare, through ‘meeting by the waters’ and participating in the healing rituals of sanatoria, is an observation and an invitation to collective healing. Partly a poetic interpretation of the universal meaning of the source, partly a meditation on trauma, identity and our connection to the natural world beyond the physical, this work is a gentle call for a return towards the sacred knowledge of nature, a shared capacity for repair, reconnection, and belonging. Is the artist ever present, invisible or absent in the work of art? Slavic Anew Collective is pleased to present ‘Shall Leave No Trace’, a multimedia group exhibition featuring works by Livvy Fink, Hesi Glowacki, Alexei Izmaylov, Alana Jelinek, Karolina Lebek, Maja ∀. Ngom, Patricia Petersen, Olha Pryymak, Simona Racheva and Niko Raic. Curated by Hesi Glowacki in collaboration with Karolina Łebek this exhibition delves into the rich artistic, intellectual, and existential landscape crossed by only a few artists, alumni and educators of the Royal College of Art, correlated by Slavic background. Held within the Hangar Space on the Battersea Campus, ‘Shall Leave No Trace’ explores the complexity of memory and its contribution towards visibility, relevance, and/or absence of artists’ identity in the work of art. ‘Shall Leave No Trace’ outlines the relationship between the body and consciousness, the tangible and immaterial through various mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation and glass, interweaving with Slavic mythology, art and culture. Slavic Anew is a collaborative initiative of artists connected by Slavic roots, currently based in the UK. Our mission focuses on nurturing and promoting a supportive community, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and artistic diversity of our members. Private View on Monday 17th of March, 6-9pm. Exhibition Continues: 18-22nd of March, 12-6pm daily. Some raw clips from my last filmmaking trip to the Carpathian Mountains in Poland, completing a work titled sanare. Oh the irony of attempting to make a film about healing, moments ahead of the covid-19 pandemic. First part of this project was shot in September 2019, with the work in progress edit being shown as part of the @mk_gallery MK Calling exhibition, just before the first lockdown. The gallery invited me to DJ at the opening night that took place on Valentine’s day in 2020 and I remember playing music to an empty room, filled with anxiety. Just days after that we separated for months, retreating into ourselves, embarking on a journey to recovery that took years, and for some is still ongoing. The first stage of research for this project was funded by @artsterritory , as part of illusion of return project. This work became inseparable from life, with the need to slow down and attend to all other wounded and tender areas while the film itself kept on transforming with me. Oh the irony of trying to finish this film in 2022 during my first trip to Poland since the pandemic began, which took place just after I experienced covid for the first time. I was unable to proceed as normal and from a filmmaker documenting healing through water in mountain sanatoria, I became a patient. Too tired to climb stairs, let alone mountains. The third trip to the source took place this April, just after I recovered from a second covid infection which wasn’t anywhere near as severe, this time hoping that the roles of a patient in recovery and a filmmaker in process will coexist giving space to one another, perhaps this was always the purpose of this work. 💧💧💧

As I set to return to the Carpathian Mountains in Poland to finish my last film commission started here just before the pandemic changed most of everyone’s plans, I’ve been thinking a lot about the first endeavour in filmmaking in this part of the world, so deeply embedded in my personal history. This 2018 video was the first attempt at articulating the meaning of my heritage as a member of Lemko ethnic minority. Repeating the journey into the mountains that I first experienced as a nine year old child, I thought about my grandmother Irena who faced violent deportation from this region as a child herself in 1947. Through conversations about her experiences and research into the trauma of ethnic cleansing of the region enforced that year, I tried making sense of fragmented history of the Lemko diaspora first hand, by re/visiting spaces connected to our family, taking note of what remains. Using a hand held HD camcorder I felt like a voyeur moving through spaces guarded with caution, peeping through keyholes, walking softly and listening for clues. It is only natural that I was greeted by a sense of mistrust as an outsider and perhaps not the first voyeur of this kind, despite articulating my origins as intertwined with my local hosts. The film itself documents the confusion of the first visit to the ancestral homeland as an adult, grief for what’s lost and an instant sense of belonging. This 8 minute film was part of my solo exhibition at Departure Lounge Gallery, supported by @aceagrams
