Two weeks at the @asmara.casa Art Residency in Scicli, Sicily. Two weeks in the sun. Thank you @mattomek for having me! 💙🍊 When I arrived, I was surprised by how restless I felt. For the first week, I gave space for my body to calm down. Sometimes we do not even realise we are operating on adrenaline, constantly producing and always on the move. I was on the verge of burning out before my arrival and did not even know it. It took time to adjust. Casa Asmara let me slooww down, and I gradually became more aware of the details around me: the stone facades, carvings, washed-out blue doors, fresh mandarins, ricotta, and daily delicacies. Having space to experience these things without rushing brought me back into the present 🌞 During this residency I realised I am still learning how to rest, and being able to stay in this beautiful home and its surroundings brought me back to my centre. During this time, I assembled my first chandelier. I brought hand-shaped pieces of glass that I made in Sweden, sandblasted to soften their glow. Inspired by Italian chandeliers in churches and the textured stones commonly found around Sicily, I attached each piece with wire to three metal rings, anxious that it might not turn out how I had planned it in my head, but it emerged perfectly into the room, almost like it’s always been there 🩶 Before I arrived, I also thought about what I wanted to feel at Casa Asmara. I mixed a unique light tone, inspired by the warmth of Italy and the sun, and sprayed it onto a ceramic EMPATHY vessel I made. I seem to have empathy towards materials, tending to them and taking care of them when I work, and during this trip it became very apparent that I want to extend this same attention towards my body and be kinder to myself 🦋 Exploration in my practice does not always come through pushing. Sometimes it begins with creating enough space to listen more closely and to notice the beauty around me. 🏳️ #DesignblokSelects: Designer, artist, and regular Designblok participant @karokuc has launched a new collection of suspended glass objects titled EROS, embodying the emotions surrounding her move to Stockholm. The collection marks the artist’s first systematic exploration of borosilicate glass and working with suspension. The fragile objects, hand-shaped over a torch, form delicate lines that intertwine in space to create open structures, resembling drawn outlines rather than solid forms. The individual shapes, inspired by antiquity and the artist’s earlier works, naturally balance themselves on thin steel cables. ~ 🇨🇿 Designérka, umělkyně a pravidelná účastnice Designbloku @karokuc uvedla novou kolekci závěsných skleněných objektů EROS, zhmotňující pocity ohledně jejího stěhování do Stockholmu. Kolekce představuje autorčino první systematické zkoumání borosilikátového skla a práci se závěsem. Křehké objekty, ručně formované nad kahanem, tvoří jemné linie, které se v prostoru propojují do otevřených struktur připomínajících spíše obtažené rysy než pevné formy. Jednotlivé tvary, inspirované antikou i autorčinými staršími pracemi, na tenkých ocelových lankách se samy vyvažují.

Introducing EROS 🩶 a series of hanging glass sculptures made during my first semester at @konstfack in Stockholm. Created during a time of transition, this work became a way to search for steadiness through making. Built line by line from lampworked borosilicate glass, the forms exist as traced outlines rather than filled shapes. These structures show balance and tension, presence without weight. Suspended on thin steel threads, the objects hold themselves while being held. EROS is about staying with vulnerability and giving it structure. Portrait by my lovely @wallmanju 🫂

🩶 #Courage: Women in Architecture, Design, and Applied Arts. @karokuc is among the twenty female authors whose work will be showcased in this year’s main Designblok exhibition at @upm_prague .
 Karolína Kučerová is a ceramic artist born in the USA to a Slovak mother and a Czech father. She moved to Prague ten years ago and discovered the world of ceramics in 2019. She graduated from the Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain at UMPRUM and is now heading for her master’s studies in Sweden. She also gained experience in Jerusalem and Kyoto, where she learned glasswork and traditional Japanese techniques. Her work naturally bridges applied and fine art, pointing to a rapidly evolving creative personality. The exhibition is curated by Michaela Kadnerová and will be on view at @upm_prague until 2 November 2025. We thank @tmobile_cze for supporting our main exhibition, Czech design, and culture. Zkušenosti získala také v Jeruzalémě a Kjótu, kde se učila práci se sklem i tradičními japonskými technikami. Její tvorba přirozeně propojuje užité a volné umění a naznačuje rychle se formující tvůrčí osobnost. Kurátorkou výstavy je Michaela Kadnerová a k vidění bude v @upm_prague až do 2. listopadu 2025.
