Weeks posts
RELEASE DAY! These are the 15 rescued Forest Red Tailed Black Cockatoos from posts earlier in the week, now enjoying their second shot at freedom! Almost all of these cockatoos came into care young and required careful and professional handraising, ensuring no imprinting and developement of socialastion skills needed to be released back into the wild! A LOT of effort has gone into these cockatoos! Most have been with us around 2 YEARS, while they weaned, matured and learnt the forgaing skills necessary to survive in the wild. It is such a great feeling to see all of our volutneers hard work pay off and see them enjoy their second chance at freedom after such a long time in care. Hopefully they will spend the next 30-40 years happily in the wild and produce many little cockatoos to help #saveaspecies Each cockatoo is microchuipped and fitted with a unique leg band. Three of these cockatoos were also sponsored. 'Crackle' and 'Babin' were kindly sponsored by our good friends at @blackcockatoodistillary and 'Thyme' was kindly sponsored by Ben and Nicole! We couldn't do this work without support from generous people and companys like this so we are always extremily greatful for support! Today we were visited by a large flock of Carnaby’s, making use of the bountiful hakeas planted onsite for them! They showed particular fondness to our Harsh Hakea (hakea prostrata), Emu Tree (Hakea francisiana) and Sea Urchin Hakea (Hakea petiolaris) even though the pods are not ripe yet. Perths Carnaby’s are starving. This has been the worst year we have ever seen with countless Carnabys presenting with no injury, illness but rather just weak and emaciated from the lack of food in Perths suburbs. The prolonged drought in summer has also contributed to the lack of food, as has our continued net loss of native vegetation on the Swan Coastal Plain. These Hakeas on our site are not large! Many are only around 2m in height and would be suitable for most gardens or verges! Our Carnaby’s need our help and need us to help them by providing native food in our gardens. It is still a great time to start planting while we have rains in Perth. So please head to your local native nursery and and grab some Hakeas, Banksias, Grevilleas, Callistemon (bottlebrush) and if you have space a Eucalyptus species to keep Perths Carnaby’s fed! #tosaveaspecies #carnaby #blackcockatoo #rewildperth

At Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre, we encourage natural behaviours… even when that behaviour is ‘throw absolutely everything’ 😆 This young Baudin’s black cockatoo is full of personality 💚 And that’s exactly what we will lose, tragically Baudin’s black cockatoos are critically endangered and at risk of full extinction within our lifetime 😭 What can you do to help these sunning creatures? Kaarakin is actively working to protect these beautiful creatures, you can make a donation or adopt a black cockatoo today to support us to continue this important conservation work...rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing black cockatoos back into the wild for their second chnace at freedom! Go to / and help us continue the fight... “To save a species!!!” #zanthorrea_nursery #friendsofkingspark #perthzoo #BirdlifeWA #SaveASpecies #vetafarm #sallyedmondsart #blackcockatoocrisis #thebirdphotographer #mucheatreefarm #wildliferescue #blackcockatoodistillery #darlingrangewildlifeshelter #departmentofbiodiversityconservationandattractions #MurdochUniversity #perthhills

As previously posted Kaarakin was honoured to host QLD Senator the Hon. Murry Watt, Federal Minister for the Environment and Water, along with Labor Party MP Trish Cook and Terresa Lynes the Mayor of the City of Gosnells! This visit was also published in an article in the Gosnells Examiner newspaper, outlining Kaarakin's plans to expand our rehabilitation program to support the ever-increasing number of black cockatoos that need our help to survive! Currently Kaarakin houses close to 300 birds progressing through our world class rehabilitation program before being released back into the wild. Its world class as close to 96% of all cockatoos that enter our rehabilitation program are released for a second chance at life! During the visit Kaarakin discussed the potential for federal funding of up to $5 million dollars to support this expansion which would see an increase in care facilities, breeding programs to prevent extinction of critically endangered Baudin's black cockatoos and preparation for the Avian Influenza that is decimating bird populations around the world and is predicted to make landfall in Australia within the next 6 months. Its trying times for our endemic black cockatoos, but with funding support from the Government and our amazing supporters, like you, there is hope!! We are deeply grateful to Murry, Trish and Terresa for their time, and to our amazing volunteers that attended on the day, and to all our dedicated volunteers that work hard to keep Kaarakin running every day, thank you!! How can you help, contact your members for parliament and Minister for Environment and Water to ensure your voice is heard and help us secure funding for Kaarakin to continue its efforts to Save a Species!!! #blackcockatoocrisis #blackcockatoodistillery #perthhills #zanthorrea_nursery #BirdlifeWA #perthzoo #mucheatreefarm #departmentofbiodiversityconservationandattractions #sallyedmondsart #SaveASpecies #MurdochUniversity #friendsofkingspark #vetafarm #thebirdphotographer

RESCUE SUCCESS: This may just look like any old mum and bub, but they’re very special. This mum was actually rescued as an Orphan by Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre and had to be hand raised. These young birds usually require a few years in rehab to mature and learn to skills needed to survive independently in the wild. After being rescued in 2022, she was later release in 2025 as apart of a bonded flock. This year she has been seen again. Not only still in a flock with some of her other rehab mates, but with a fledgling of her own! Ever better, the Father was also a rescued orphan and hand raised. Making this the first recorded successful breeding of hand raised red tails in the wild. 🐣 A huge credit and spot light on the importance of rehab of these cockatoos at both Kaarakin and @perthwildlifehospital and the success of the programs after their initial triage by the amazing @perthzoo vet team! #teamworkmakesdreamwork But this is just a teaser, we may or may not have a second or third success story of hand raised cockatoos coming soon 😉 *cockatoos are able to be identified due to unique leg band numbers each receives prior to release* #kaarakin #tosaveaspecies #blackcockatoo

Minister Murray Watt has probably heard me talk about Kaarakin and black cockatoos more than he ever expected, but I make no apologies. The rehabilitation work they do is vital to protecting these iconic birds, and I’m pleased I could show him this special place in Bullwinkel.🪶

Not all of our rescued and rehabilitated cockatoos are eager to leave their crates upon release 🦜 🤣 Some need a big of encouragement! Here’s our last red tail being given a helping hand so she could join the rest of her flock for their second shot at freedom! ♥️🖤 #kaarakin #tosaveaspecies 📸 @millo_hd
