the soon to be released debut album from our collaborative project, @blackholesoundsyndicate
I could write a million words about the story behind this record:
the unlikely chain of events that brought it into existence, the profound transformations we both experienced in 2025, and the countless hours spent scoring, writing, recording, and producing.
I’ll save that story for another time.
For now, I just want to wish all of you — friends, family, and everyone who’s been alongside me since the very beginning of this wild musical journey — a beautiful New Year.
My resolution is simple: release an enormous amount of music.

🌀We are honored to offer the debut of our first album “Rite Of Passage” to the Playa this year. 🪐Over the past 8 months we have poured our heart and soul into this offering. It’s a story of destruction, creation, rebirth beautifully illustrated with the piano mastery @willobrien and the storytelling, vocals and electronic music production of @justinwaves join us for a special performance Wednesday 4:44pm at 9 and Esplanade (200-300ft toward the man) weather permitting! We will also be doing various pop ups elsewhere at undisclosed times. For those not attending this year’s burn, we will be releasing the album early this fall! Best Wishes!

The time has come to formally to announce @blackholesoundsyndicate a collaborative music project between myself ( @justinwaves ) and @willobrien . We have been working on an album called “The rite of Passage” since the beginning of the year, which we completed just in time for burning man. We also had the privilege to perform our first show this past Saturday for a conjoined birthday party @poppyseeddancer@powerbyruthie as well a bonus set afterward aboard a 100ft yacht on the San Francisco Bay courtesy of @jerrysfaeries . An epic debut to say the least. We will be doing pop ups around the playa all week and we aim to formally release the album early this fall. 🪐🌊🎹✨
I’m about to dismantle the Waveship, this woodworking project I built during COVID has been my creative workstation the past five years. I thought before I send this dusty ol ship into storage, I would share a few moments of inspiration it’s brought me over the past few months, mostly improvisations in various genres as my relationship to music has been evolving. (Some new Justin Waves will be coming soon 💙🌊).
The upside: In its place will be a Yamaha P2 console Piano, I am having moved over today. Shout out to one of my Piano Technician mentors Carol for the hook up on this. It will be a project as much work needs to be done to, but I really look forward to the learning adventure and studio recordings with this beautiful instrument. I will document the restor

It’s been an extraordinary journey performing and creating music for all of you over the past decade. It’s brought me so many rich experiences, and connections that I will forever cherish.
Over time, I’ve come to a realization: the dream I once had for Justin Waves—being a successful touring artist—feels like a lonely, inwardly focused life, and not aligned with my ultimate goal. All I’ve ever truly wanted was enough security to create a safe and loving container for a family. Given the current state of the music industry and the lifestyle it demands, it’s time for a new direction.
Next week, I’ll be leaving Truckee and moving to Santa Cruz, where I’ll live by the ocean with some of my closest friends. I’ll be returning to school to finish a music degree I once left behind, this time with a clear purpose: to pursue a career as a licensed Music Therapist and educator. I have seen first hand my music help aid grief, heartbreak, and end of life support. I’ve seen my doings spark hope in people, and inspire their own creativity and self-expression. I believe this to be my highest offering. I begin in February.
This does not mark the end for Justin Waves, but rather the beginning of a new and healthy chapter for my spirit and my passion for healing through music.

Recap of my travels to New Mexico for Moonlanding 3 festival. Huge gratitude to @thejournaloflosttime for hosting such a special event. It was the perfect space for me to reconnect with my art and myself. 🙏🌊🌌 I played 3 sets, made some amazing new friends, created 2 tracks (like the one playing now), learned to play the lasers, climbed my first multi-pitch, and left feeling deeply inspired.
