Brand new live binaural recording of @jasondeawest & the Siskiyou Crest of their song ā€˜So It Goes’. Jason and the crew came through in September and recorded a pile of songs with the full band to help me launch a new recording project. This project is a new recording series that I’m excited to start sharing called Timeless Archives. Timeless Archives combines 2 very unique recording styles to create fully immersive live field recordings. As with the Magnolia Sessions, these recordings are done completely live, with no overdubs. Just straight forward raw takes. What sets this project apart is the combination of an old timey single microphone setup, where the entire band crowds around one mic, and uses their proximity to balance their levels in the mix, often stepping forward or back to increase or decrease presence in real time. This is combined with the binaural recording technique, which uses a specially made microphone that emulates human hearing in how it picks up sound, by using the same acoustic principles that your human head uses when listening to sound. The end result is a recording that is sonically as close to how it would sound if the band were right in front of you as you could ever get. Including the perception of distance and direction from your ears. I highly advise listening with headphones to get the full effect. This recording has @amieastelle on bass, @mason.alexander.weems on fiddle, @semiferalism on banjo, @juliafryling on drums, @norita_jean_ on backing vocals, @scorpiomanifesto on dog wrangling among a zillion other things, and of course Jason Dea West on vocals and reso guitar. All production done by me through @black_matter_mastering , Art by @flyinhighranch Available wherever you listen to music.

Last winter while visiting NW Wisconsin, I was asked to play music for an old farmer on his deathbed. I’d had met this charming character once before while getting an adjustment from a friend who’s does chiropractic work. He was in line after me. This witty old fella had a youthful twinkle in his eye and a deep love for country music, even sprung in to a Hank senior song acapella. We talked briefly about how he knew my grandfather and may have sold him tractor machinery parts in the late 70s & 80s A year later his health had declined as folk’s in their late 80s often experience When I was explained his situation/condition with the idea of a home hospices type concert in mind of course I said yes. I chose a handful of vintage country tunes and a couple originals then headed out to his homestead. I had expected it to be just him in his three daughters but when I arrived I found about 20 people, Auntā€˜s uncles & cousins had all gathered around for this special occasion. It felt a bit like a private house show mixed with a celebration of life & death. There was even a Mennonite families there. I felt a bit shy of even my calmest & most wholesome material. But they were all very respectful & appreciative I had come. As I played the old tunes on my steel guitar the old boy laid back blissfully in his chair, smiling in his eyes and tapping his fingers perfectly in time. Much of the relatives doing the same and many of them in tears. Each of them thanking me as I left the house that day. Just three days later, as I was finishing Vonneguts slaughterhouse five for the second time where he famously repeats the phrase ā€œSo It Goesā€ I got a phone call that the old man had passed. I hung up the phone and closed the book, I listen to the 30 below windchill tearing outside the thin cabin walls and then wrote this song front to back Enjoy!
