It was the most pleasant feeling I’d had in a long time. My coffee had gone room temperature and I was reading a jacketless Philip Roth. The houses on either side of me were in full sun but Maureen’s backyard was cloaked in the shade of the huge oak. Ivy crawled up the old fence. My feet were cold. I felt the sort of peace I only had when Maureen was close by. She was the most solid thing in my life, I had realized. I watched a grotesque spider crawl through thin air towards the bird feeder. Along the garden bed was a bolted cilantro plant, a healthy spread of oregano, and dead fennel. A feral cat was keeping her nest of kittens underneath the firewood on the back veranda. I wanted to keep the striped one. The yard was full of acorns that hurt my bare feet as I went back and forth to get another cup from the French press. The water took nearly 15 minutes to boil in the enamel pot. A cardinal hopped past my cold feet. I love their Mohawks, I texted Adam.
