WORKSHOPS!
GLASS FLAME WORKING I will be starting up series of borosilicate glass flameworking classes, learning build 3d flowers...!
Times are negotiable!
Four spots available per class, per day @ 100€ per spot.
In this session, you will learn basic torch control, basic health and safety on glass working and also learn to separate the glass and bond it together in the flame. You will learn control and quickly be able to construct an elaborate glass flower, which you will be able to take home.
No previous skill is required. Classes are taught in English, but only basic understanding is required.

THE KRING CHANDELIER
The word 'kring' is the Dutch word for 'circle', which expresses the core concept of this chandelier

Over 80% of the components of this chandelier have been purchased from the local second hand shops called, 'The Kringwinkel', of which there are many, in and around Antwerpen. I spent almost an entire summer collecting many pieces of used, secondhand glass for this project, cycling around the province of Antwerpen with saddle bags and large Bergen sack.... Not only did I enjoy making this chandelier, it also kept me fit..lol
Components are mostly mass produced items, with some slightly more expensive crystal items and all have finishing touches of hand flameworked items which generally have 24ct gold leaf or immition gold on them.
All are uv bonded with Bohles MV760 (a brilliant uv glue in my opinion) and suspended with a thick rope.
DIMENSIONS: 2.5M Lenght by 80cm Width.
The chandelier now hangs in Archipel's, Club Frigo and it is witness to rock bands, raves, art exhibitions and cultural events / festivals

KATARA TOWER, Qatar / Al Thani Collection, Paris, 2024
Completed in 2024, I was commissioned by Artlink to produce a set of vessels, for the new Katara Tower in Qatar. They were also displayed in Paris for a time, in the @al.thani.collection .... wish I'd known.... I would have gone myself!

OUR LONDINIUM 2012
Wow...a blast from the past, and being in a museum collection I had completely forgotten about! Will add this to my CV ASAP!
The exhibition was entitled 'Our Londinium', at The Museum of London, in the City, at One London Wall... the exhibition compared archaeological finds in London with modern-day equivalents..
I was approached by the London Museum to do comparison, for what I seem to remember was a Roman kiln cast plate (i might be wrong) , made from 100s of individual pieces of glass cane.... Despite looking like sandy colour, in the detail, it had an iridescent blue tinge to it, hence why Chysanthemum piece was blue.
The comparison was that whoever made the dish spent hours making all the individual components.... something which I do... The dish was found in a grave in London.

BASIC JEWELERY MAKING COURSE

For some years now, I have been teaching a basic flameworking skills course, for jewelery making in waste @reroglass , based @blikfabriek , Hoboken.
One of the little projects I get all my students to do is making little viruses as earings or a pendent. With this object you learn to gather glass into a ball / marble and add surface texture, utilising the Hobnail technique. Also a loop or hook, from which to hang the item.
From this class a few weeks ago came a variety of shapes, sizes and colours, and also some impromptu experimentation! Fair to say, I was quite happy with the results.

OPPORTUNITY
Glass Flame / Lamp workers wanted to share in a flame studio.
Glass flame workers, of any skill level, are sought after to activate a lampworking studio run by myself @ Archipel, on the Slacthuislaan, Antwerpen.
To date, James lethbridge Glass has four positions for people to work. Currently the studio is set up for borosilicate flame working, utilising a variety of torches using oxygen and propane. These include Carlise, Nortel and Jencon torches. With your addition to the studio I am happy to share my equipment and experience. Also, I am open to the adaptation of the studio to accommodate your needs, with your equipment.
I look for soft glass / borosilciate workers, sculptural, bead workers etc, or any other techniques such as glass lathe / neon workers.
For the future I hope to be able to open up the studio for private teaching experiences, where you would be more than welcome to develop your own course in glass making. Access to the studio would be 24hrs 7 days a week.
Within all of this you would also become a member of the artist collective, Archipel. Archipel is a studio whereby we are able to practice our own art, but we come together to provide communal art experiences for the community. Currently, we have also secured funding to build a gallery space and 'club' area within Archipel. This means you maybe able to hold your solo exhibitions @ Archipel within the near future and have the facilities at your disposal, to entertain 100s of guests.
