The MOYA African Glass Network is excited to announce the upcoming Glass Safari, which will take place in July 2026. Among the invited glass artists is Frederik Rombach, the owner of RERO Glass in Antwerp, Belgium. Here is what he has to say about his expectations for the Glass Safari:
“Being raised in Benoni, just outside Jo'burg and now being a part of this glass event 30 years later means a lot to me. The lessons I learned from South Africa; the hands on approach/ get in done - this is Africa - mindset were instrumental in where I stand now with RERO glass. This state of mind; to make something out of nothing is the key to success in being a Maker, I think. To be able to come back to SA and share what I have learnt and help others move forward is a privilege and quite simply fantastic.”
RERO Glass is a public access studio that works exclusively with recycled glass. RERO Glass explores themes of eco-friendly consumption, collaborating with universities, international artists and designers. Frederik set up RERO to invite artists, designers, architects and students to explore the material, research techniques and collaborate. As well as creating products and projects, the studio regularly hosts workshops, events and university programmes, welcoming close to 2 500 people each year.
The Glass Safari is an initiative led by the Glass Studio at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in collaboration with local African glass artists and makers, the MOYA African Glass Network and visiting international glass artists. The aim of the Glass Safari is to promote international collaboration between glass artists and creatives, thereby contributing to the growth of creative communities on the African continent. The MOYA African Glass Network warmly welcomes Frederik to the upcoming Glass Safari in July.

What if "waste" glass was actually a luxury material? Twelve years ago in Antwerp, Frederik Rombach founded Rero Glass with a radical mission: recycling float glass (window glass) into tactile art.
His first "glory hole" wasn’t a factory-grade furnace—it was a heating chamber assembled from an old heater and mounted on a shopping cart. From reshaping wine bottles to rebuilding his own kilns, Frederik has become Europe’s leading specialist in melting waste glass.
Through years of researching products, sculptures, and educational projects, he discovered new tactile possibilities in traditional glassblowing techniques. The result of this process is the Float Series.
Discover the pieces at our current exhibition, Basic Instinct: Making–With. Stay to grab a drink or a bite afterward!
