#gaffer 💡 (@peachrowmedia ) The new Pavoslim 360c has become one of my favorite go to lights! @maxwellcollinsdp saw this space and wanted to take advantage of the interesting slanted roof, and the windows fit the Pavoslim 360 perfectly! The output on this thing is insane, being able to only have the 1 fixture inside the room that was shot at nighttime for DFN made everything a breeze. We rigged it up, framed the shot, and it was naturally ready to go. We threw some of my favorite diffusion on it(bleached mus) for a nice soft tone, and had @nicolerosedarecca sit in the perfect spot for some great depth! Lastly we had an @asteraofficial titan tube outside the room just to give it some texture. Thank you to @nanlite_global for sending the Pavoslim 360c for us to try! #gaffer 💡 (@texaspete ) Sometimes it can really feel like the Wild West out there! This was one of my favorites shoots of all time. We had to make a 53 minute video in 2 days, which was no easy task! Working with the legend @daniel_with_a_camera was such a blessing. He had a clear vision from the beginning, and allowed myself and my KG @likethedistancee to go to town. We wanted to utilize the windows of the saloon by having 2 @nanluxamericas 2400Bs outside blasting sunlight in, with (2) @creamsource Vortex 8s in the back of the building wrapping the sun. @likethedistancee and @its_just_hai rigged some points for myself and @solarfoxco to put pixel bricks in the ceiling where we bounced them off some bleached Muslin on the counter. We had (2) titans in the background to light the wall behind them and also serve as a backlight when needed, and finally had (2) LM4s on the ground to do wraps. #gaffer 💡 (@carlostigs ) How can you use mirrors to your advantage? Something I’ve been wanting to try for a long time is using 1(or 2) sources and bringing in a bunch of mirrors to make it feel like we are using multiple lights. @carlostigs and I had a plan ahead of time and picked a night and did a little test shoot to see how achievable it was, what challenges this brings, and how smooth the workflow is. Now we can implement this knowledge into future projects we do together. We have a @nanlux_official 150c pointed at (2) @godox_global 40x40 mirrors, with some @dedolight 1x1 mirrors and a small make up mirror to help shape the sodium vapor look and wrap it inside the room. Then we have a @nanlux_official 600c(one of my new favorite lights) with the parallel beam into another Godox mirror high up for a nice blue moonlight. Lastly we had a pavoslim in the room with mus on it for a little indirect fill on the subject. Something I realized is how needed doing these little experiments are. They allow for mistakes to be made without any pressure, and allow for literally any idea to be put on the table. We tried 2-3 different looks before landing on this one, and we still finished the day fairly early. Thank you to @nanlux_official for sending the 600C and parallel beam for us to try! #gaffer 💡 (@borgataac ) Taking advantage of stage lighting to help is such a perk! When getting this shot, we had the privilege of having access to the board and board op from the stage. However, the conversation was very untraditional! @scpictures and I wanted to light not just the stage but also the audience. We wanted the space to come alive and feel like a real party! We used (2) @aputure.lighting Nova P300cs to lift the space with fun colors, as well as adding some @nanlite_official 60c in frame to really sell the stage feel. We also had @jpona1 on the light moving it around. A special touch I love to do is add @asteraofficial Titan tubes right at the edge of the stage. It adds a visual interest(by not having the stage just end) but also is another chance to add some color to the scene. Lastly we added a Litemat 4 to fill the performer from stage side as well. #gaffer 💡 (@borgataac ) When you’re allowed to do something what you want, you can sometimes make something beautiful ! This hotel room was a little on the boring side. We needed a way to make it feel like a party, but didn’t have the time to really dress it or fill it with actors. I turned to @scpictures and said I have a crazy idea, let’s lean in to the color ideas we’ve been doing this entire shoot and take it to an 11! We didn’t want to see outside so we hid @asteraofficial Helios tubes on the floor uplighting the curtains. We added (2) @nanlite_global 60Cs with Lekos on the floor shooting up st the talent to give them a defined edge, but swapped the colors to match the side they’re facing. Added a @litegear LM4 to fill the space and finally an additional 60C leko to have a 5600K white streak cutting through the color and adding a little fun slash. I love have the corner of the room is dead center frame with a clear cut of the 2 main colors. 🥰🥵 I think this frame is my absolute favorite thing from 2025. #gaffer 💡 (@borgataac ) Casinos are known for many things, but for us film folk, it means we can really embrace some color! This is number 1 of 5 photos from @scpictures photo/video shoot at @borgataac that we did last April. This one was all about slots baby! Knowing the casino has lots of color, we decided to go full in on the color options for this setup. Keeping in mind that everything we did had to work for photo and video. Titan tubes were the best choice for this since they naturally have that amazing titan engine from @asteraofficial . We were able to hide a few in between slots, and added @aputure.lighting nova p300s and @nanlite_global 60CRs (the good ol’ Penza Titan/60C combo) to add pops of color throughout the space. Finally I added a Helios tube for some slot machine lighting effects on the face. Guess you could say we hit the jackpot with this one! #gaffer 💡(@mcjuggernuggets ) A simple way of adding depth without the need of more lights is to add separation between l if it’s and create pools of light! Separation and depth is something that will always give you the more cinematic and dynamic shot! For this shot, Director @mcjuggernuggets & DP @paultrout.mp4 wanted a horror feel with the lighting for the recreation portion of the documentary feature(filmed in 2023). I added @asteraofficial titans into the fixtures in the school and separated them by 1 housing. Obviously had to go green and some flicker for some extra spooky 👻 goodness! #gaffer💡 (Swipe Feature Film) How do you light when you are filming a movie and you see 100% of every surface possible? Practically of course! This location was a big challenge in pre production because we saw everything. We had no way of adding any lights, so doctor @guillermocameo turned to me and said “fuck it” so we lit it practically! @asteraofficial sent me a third set of Luna bulbs, and a second set of NYX bulbs to help tackle this challenge. We used over 24 Lunas for this specific shot! This gave me full control of the space and allowed me to do some fun effects as well! What ended up being such a challenge in pre ended being the easiest day(s) on set because we only had practicals to worry about. And it looks great! But I’ve realized I think it shows more skill as to what can be done with 1 or 2 lights to make an image shine. For this web series, the DP @hribar and I wanted to play with natural ambience as much as possible(other shots was a oner) so we had to light minimal. We put the @nanlux_global 2400B outside, and with a leko, the @nanlite_global 60C to create that beautiful blinds look. One of the most convincing blinds I’ve seen. #gaffer💡(@oxygen ) Use of ceilings with control can make for a truly beautiful image! A lot of the times we tend to avoid the lights in the ceiling because we can’t control them, or they might not look pleasing to the eye. However, when you have the ability to control them, they can make for some beautiful wide shots that really feel natural and real. For this shot, director @judsonlee and DP @thecinemadp really wanted to have control over the lights and take advantage of this very large space we have. We took some @asteraofficial titan tubes and Helios tubes and replaced the fluorescent tubes in the ceiling. @judsonlee wanted to really feel Fincher for this, so instead of just adding tint to a CCT, we desaturated a green HSI value to get that sweet spot of green but not too over the top. For the practicals, we wanted a warm look but tungsten just wasn’t enough. We really wanted to play against the green, so we went for an amber/yellow look dialed down pretty low to really make them pop. Added a few @nanlite_global 60CRs for extra pop and with @mattjweir beautiful set design we have this jaw dropping image!! #gaffer 💡 (@dancentrone ) We love using cooler colors in these types of settings! Something I find myself not doing as often is going any cooler than 5600k out of feature of getting “too blue”. However, I find that having my fixtures at 6500k while camera is rated at 5600k to get a nice mix of white and blue. For this shot, @dkruta wanted to have a top light and a practical backlight, so I knew the go to was @asteraofficial titan tubes for the practicals, and a @litegear Litemat 4 spectrum as a top is the perfect combination. My good friends at @asteraofficial also sent me out a set of pixel bricks to test out which I used in this frame as lift on frame right(and you’ll see them more in the next breakdown from this music video). We added a @nanlite_global 60C as a “key” and an edge and you got this awesome image. Super thankful for @notlukeskywalker and @ralph_ravix for helping me out on this project. @notlukeskywalker was able to rig all these lights in the perfect locations. #gaffer 💡 (@keithmarshallcolours ) How to mimic sun coming from a mosaic glass window? This project was an interesting challenge because we had a lot of beautiful mosaic glass windows letting in a lot of natural light, so it wasn’t as simple as tuning some fixtures to 5600K and calling it a day. DP @mrjustinervin and I really wanted to lean into that cool blue look coming from the side windows, so using the new @nanlite_global 60CRs and Pavoslim 60CL, we were able to dial in the perfect shade of blue that to the eye feels very nice and natural. I added the @asteraofficial Hydra panels in the back for a nice orange glow to contrast the blues.
