Lighting has the ability to enhance or diminish the efforts of the entire crew ✨🤌✨ @colorado_gaffer Here’s another example of using color in camera to create a unique look. Not only is @daniel_with_a_camera a super talented and cool guy, he’s also a wizard of color manipulation and I love watching him create a new reality behind the lens. There are a number of ways we could have lit this library scene, and achieving this was a new challenge for us. Beginning with the camera settings: Dan dropped the ISO to the floor to lean into the low end of the curve. White balance was set to 4300K which made daylight from the windows shift cooler. 12 points of green added to camera to stylize the look even more. Window exposure was cut with ND to balance with the low ISO Then we added 1/2 CTB on top of that to push the windows cooler. Our lights were set to around 3000K so they still appeared warm in camera. The light from the windows acted as our base exposure and then we added color contrast and shape with our own fixtures. The subject’s face was lit with an @aputure.lighting MC bounced into a piece of notebook paper. We placed B7Cs in each lamp for pools of light down the line. A @litegear LiteMat 4 Spectrum came from above for a toppy fill and several @asteraofficial Titan Tubes with @dopchoice Snapgrids pushed warm light from the aisles for a back edge and more color contrast. Once you understand the relationship between your camera settings and the light you’re using you can do some pretty cool stuff! This was a fun setup because it needed to be a DAY INT but I wanted to retain the dark, more intimate, romantic feeling that the restaurant dining room was suggesting up naturally. This posed a challenge because those two things are seemingly in opposition. So I opted to use the warmth that the existing practical pendant lights were offering as our sort of tonal base (here I go again with warm practicals). Then from there we created a big wall of soft light using M40 book lights for our key and then we wrapped that with an S360 pushed through some diffusion. This allowed our talent to be well lit as she walked the 25 feet or so from the front of the restaurant towards the kitchen behind us. We then edged with several Vortex 8’s from an upstage 3/4 angle and then peppered in little accent lights to add interest and that extra little spice. As with the kitchen scene I went with a warmer color for the key and then set the in-camera white balance to around 3200K to make the daylight from outside feel slightly cooler.

Creating this look was a fun challenge because knew we wanted it to feel like a high-end Michelin-star kitchen but we didn’t want it to feel clinical or surgical in any way. So I opted to lean into a bit of color contrast here and to create layers using pockets of light that were either warm or cool. The existing practical heat lamps were these beautiful tungsten bulbs and I loved the way they bounced off the kitchen’s prep station so I figured why not use them to our advantage! During the scout I asked art department for white cutting boards so the light would bounce up even more. Then G&E rigged some litemats overhead and we set the temperature of the lights to somewhere around 5000K and I set that in-camera temp to around 3200K to create the cool feeling. From there it was just a matter of placing a few ‘practicals’ (like the 2’ Helios tube on the right side) for some interest and pushing some soft light from the left side of frame for some added dimension.

Pizza Time (2019) One of my favorite frames from the film. Inspired by a lot of the camera blocking from John Wick and Jackie Chan films @ryan_polly and I were always looking for moments where we could pull back from the action and let everything play out in a wide.
