Rooted in photography and digital media, Eli Joteva’s practice traces the space between material and virtual worlds — shaped by contemporary research in quantum mechanics, neurophysics, and machine vision. A Bulgarian-American intermedia artist, researcher, and educator, her work has been exhibited internationally across Europe, the US, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia, and most recently she served as a Visualization Research Artist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.

UVision is a new generative series exploring UV reflectance in flowers: the hidden color language plants use to communicate with pollinators 🌺
Using @fuserstudio ’s new Creative Code node, I created an interactive system that allows you to tap and initiate a flower scan to reveal them in UV vision.
The flower forms themselves are shaped by my daily biofeedback data in ThreeJS... but more on that soon 👁

LiDAR is a reality-scanning technology that surpasses human perception in both spectrum (near-infrared) and speed (light speed). Joteva’s work unveils other level inaccessible – the two-way metamorphoses of life and death in a mesmerizing resemblance of the cosmic and the subatomic.
It’s hard to deny yourself the pleasure of this play of scales across the facade screens and the perceived permeability of the cyclopean architecture of global cities.

This work is an excerpt from the project "Chtonic Light" exploring the perpetual cycle of death and renewal, reimagining the darkness of the chthonic underground as fertile tonic for transformation. Created in memory of my two grandmothers, it traces connections between the microscopic and the cosmic, the personal and the infinite. Over two years marked by personal grief, the image of cosmic flowers descending like subatomic stars became a source of solace. This work materializes that image with a LIDAR scan of a tiger lily simulated to pulse with energy and disintegrate into a constellation of digital particles. "Chtonic Light" was first shown as an immersive dome projection at @spectra__studio in 2023, and this summer the Lilium Lancifolium excerpt from it ran across urban screens in Dubai and London.
