The next artist introduction of Sonsbeek 2026 is Jota Mambaça (@jotamombaca ). Mombaça is an interdisciplinary artist whose work revolves around elemental forms of sensing and anticolonial imagination. The artist locates consciousness in geological time, predating language, memory, and the body itself. Mombaça celebrates the lack of control over things and is interested in activating processes through which the land can intervene directly. In her own words, the approach she uses is often led by forces that remain mysterious to her. Presenting “Course III: Social Imagination” with Franco “Bifo” Berardi (@bifoscepsi ), Hans Ulrich Obrist (@hansulrichobrist ), and Jota Mombaça (@jotamombaca ) “Social Imagination” is the third and final course of the first year of “Agora: A Gathering of Art and Philosophy by Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève.” Theorist and writer Franco “Bifo” Berardi (@bifoscepsi ) teaches “The Likely Termination of Human Civilization Within the Current Century.” Curator and Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist (@hansulrichobrist ) explores the evolving relationship between artistic practice and technological development in “New Experiments in Art and Technology.” In “Burial and Breath,” interdisciplinary artist Jota Mombaça (@jotamombaca ) proposes poetic exercises that look into the relationship of body and planet, depth and decomposition, burial and breath, drawing on Denise Ferreira da Silva, Édouard Glissant, and the artist’s own “Burial” series. — — Conceived by Andrea Bellini and Federico Campagna (@fedcampagna ), Agora is a free, semester-long programme of English-language lectures, seminars, and one-to-one mentoring for eight practising artists and philosophers. Quando Jota Mombaça atravessou novamente sua chegada a Natal, após quase uma década afastada das atividades públicas, a experiência se apresentou menos como um retorno e mais como um reconhecimento, um reencontro no território que a formou. Graduada pela UFRN e nascida no bairro do Alecrim, Jota Mombaça é uma artista multidisciplinar, escritora e pesquisadora brasileira, reconhecida internacionalmente por trabalhos que atravessam raça, gênero, violência colonial, performance e teoria crítica. Agora, pela primeira vez desde que saiu da cidade, ela retornava para conduzir uma oficina de dois dias e uma fala pública no CCHLA/UFRN, espaço cultural que, antes de sua partida, já havia atravessado sua formação afetiva, política e artística. As inscrições para o Ciclo 1 do projeto Abandonar o mapa colonial: o pensamento negro-dissidente estão abertas até o dia 30 de outubro. ✨ A programação inicia com a artista Jota Mombaça (RN), entre os dias 6, 7 e 8 de novembro, propondo encontros que atravessam arte, filosofia e dissidência. A palestra “Para respirar sob a terra” é aberta ao público e acontece no Auditório B do CCHLA/UFRN, no dia 6 de novembro, das 19h às 21h. As the Late Liberal imaginary continues to invest in its own extractive relationship with the planet, nurturing an ever-growing desire to expand colonialism to the cosmos while depleting Earth of its material consistency, it is important to practice a sensibility that surrenders to the planet.” After receiving 1,000 submissions, the thirty shortlisted finalists were selected by CIRCA in collaboration with the 2025 Curators’ Circle including @amalandaplan @drabl and @samanthaozer 👩🏽‍⚖️ A prestigious jury made up of previous CIRCA artists and long-time collaborators including Björk, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Edward Enninful, Michèle Lamy, Ebony L.
