"The world is flat" is perhaps humans’ most primitive sense of physical surroundings. It was also a cosmological conclusion drawn from honest bodily perception, because the land beneath our feet is indeed still and level, and the universe unfolds as an infinitely extending plane. This perceptual honesty is where Jong Oh begins.

Through space, light, time, material, and gravity, Oh opens an improvised yet precise dialogue with the world. Improvisation is the most direct and honest response to the given moment and place: what the line weighs, the fold opens, and the material confirms. A flat world is where everything begins, and perhaps where everything returns.

오종은 구조의 선형적 리듬을 만들어내는 중력과 무게감을 섬세히 감지하고 이를 비워내는 방식으로 공간과 관계 맺는다. 본디 점·선·면의 대비는 데이터에 의해 계산된 장력 같은 물리적 균형을 통해 유지되는 반면, 그는 종종 관습적 논리나 질서를 전복하여 낯선 조형의 우주를 펼쳐 놓는다. 그의 작업은 소위 익숙한 것에서 예기치 못한 것을 발견하는, 다소 유쾌한 놀라움으로 이루어진다.

Jong Oh sensitively perceives the gravity and weight that create the linear rhythm of structure, engaging with space through acts of subtraction. While contrasts of point, line, and plane are often sustained by a calculated physical balance, he overturns such logic, unfolding instead a strange cosmos of geometry. His works elicit quiet surprise, where the unexpected emerges from what feels familiar.

무한한 밤하늘의 별과 별을 이어 별자리를 만들듯이 주어진 공간, 작은 우주 속에서 점과 점을 이어 기하학적인 그림을 그리는 오종의 새로운 작업을 기대해 주시기 바랍니다.

The ‘Summer Triangle’ is an asterism that rises highest in the summer night sky and serves as a guide to a band of stars. We are looking forward to Oh‘s new works that show a geometrical arrangement in his small universe by connecting dots in a given space, just like an asterism in the infinite night sky.

스페이스 애프터는 2025년 설립된 작가 주도형 리미티드 에디션 플랫폼 ’패들러스‘(Paddlers)와 함께, 박종호, 오종, 최수앙 세 작가가 참여하는 기획전 《캐치볼》을 개최합니다. 서울과 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 시각 예술가 안옥현과 고성이 이끄는 패들러스는 대형 상업갤러리 중심의 미술 시장 구조를 다각화하고, 예술 애호가들이 뮤지엄 퀄리티의 작품을 소장할 수 있는 기회를 확대하는 것을 목표로 결성된 콜렉티브입니다. 각각 회화, 설치, 조각의 장르에서 괄목할 행보를 이어온 박종호, 오종, 최수앙 세 작가에게 패들러스는 판화 형식의 작업을 제안하고, 작품 제작 과정부터 작품의 생산, 유통, 소장, 그리고 그 이후까지 아우르는 총체적 예술 경험을 디자인하였습니다. 이를 통해 작가들은 압착과 표면의 방식으로 현현하는 이미지의 가능성을 실험하였고, 패들러스의 첫 기획전 《캐치볼》에서 관객 여러분께 이들의 작품과 함께 하는 특별한 체험을 제공합니다. 스페이스 애프터는 패들러스가 설계한 미술시장에 대한 신선한 접근 방식과 작가들의 형식적 실험 과정에 깊이 공감하며, 그 첫 번째 기획전 《캐치볼》에 함께 합니다.
