Jonas Brinker (*b. 1989, Bochum) creates time-based works that explore the poetics of observation. His artistic process often begins with extended periods of patient looking, carefully recording the subtleties of his surroundings over time. From this vast body of footage, he distills concise yet evocative portraits of environments and their inhabitants. Brinker studied at the Städelschule Frankfurt am Main (2015–2018) under Douglas Gordon and Willem de Rooij, graduating as a Meisterschüler, and previously at the Slade School of Fine Art, London (2012–2015).
He is currently part of the group exhibition »In Between«, which explores liminal states where perception shifts and boundaries become porous. The exhibition features works by Jonas Brinker, Emmélie Lempert, Toni Meyer, and Alex Müller, and is realized in collaboration with POV Contemporary.
"Jonas Brinker’s archival prints capture the meticulous strangeness embedded in the everyday. Frost, a photographic close-up of a frozen freezer compartment, recalibrates in-betweenness as a threshold for a newly framed experience. The image is both cinematic and speculative: movement, action, and process are displaced, yet not rendered invisible. Scale and materiality oscillate between technique and landscape-like association. The work reveals an interior space that unfolds only through sustained attention – a quality that resonates throughout the exhibition."
