Jonah Feingold is applying startup logic to independent film, which may say more about him than the market. Or it may say where the market is headed. ⁠ ⁠ He’s directed four features, is about to release his fifth, and will start a sixth this summer. Now he is trying to raise $3 million for Romantical, a pitch for a media company dedicated to romantic comedy and Feingold’s attempt to build infrastructure around it. ⁠ ⁠ “Less than 3 percent of movies theatrically released were romantic comedies in the last few years and you have breakout hits like ‘Anyone but You,’” he said. “I basically wanted to put a brand around this and build an ecosystem.” ⁠ ⁠ Dive in at the link in bio.

Romantic comedies were born out of the Great Depression. When the world felt uncertain and scary, people didn’t stop going to the movies — they went more. They needed to laugh. They needed to believe in love. I’ve spent the last ten years working in that same genre, and I’ve never been more certain that it matters. Today, I’m taking the biggest leap of my career — building @itsromantical into the future of romantic comedy, and @indiewire was kind enough to share our game plan with the world.
