@jojoldn taught himself everything. @davidsonubii built the infrastructure around talent. Both of them grew up understanding that if you want something to exist, you have to make it yourself. Jojo’s story starts in Tottenham. Moves to Essex at 13. Three secondary schools, five universities, a civil engineering degree he never finished because it was never really his. But through all of it, the detours, the restarts, the getting fired from Topshop, the creativity never stopped. It just kept finding new outlets. 50p Dragon Ball Z drawings in primary school. MySpace graphics for a couple of pounds. Pamphlets for church events. Then parties. Then the graphics for the parties. Then the photos and videos too. Self-sufficient from the start, and still is. He’s an ideas person who doesn’t wait for someone else to execute, he just learns what he needs to learn and gets it done. That’s how Recess happened. That’s how No Signal happened. That’s just how Jojo moves. David came up differently, through sound design at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, then straight into A&R in 2016, working his way from scout to manager. The platforms, the communities, the spaces where emerging talent could actually grow. Sound systems. Vinyl. The stuff that lasts. High Roller is what happens when people like this find each other. David and Jojo’s Perseverance Story As we continue this season of perseverance, we introduce @davidsonubii and @jojoldn , co-founders of @rec.ess and @theresnosignal , recognised for building cultural platforms, supporting emerging talent, and shaping impactful, community-driven events in London. We sat down with them to discuss the challenges they’re facing and what perseverance looks like right now. In @davidsonubii words: “I’ve been fighting imposter syndrome my whole career, and I’m not sure it will ever end. I navigate through it by consistently educating myself on the craft. No one can validate me or my work… and that’s okay. Stay secure in yourself, have a solid foundation, and keep practising. If you feel like you have a purpose in life, you’ll see perseverance as fulfilling God’s will. Once you reframe it that way, everything changes. Perseverance is a fundamental pillar of faith, so hang in there.” In @jojoldn words: “The main challenge I’m facing right now is deciding what the next move is. I’ve got a lot of options, but that’s the challenge, choosing the right path and committing to it. I’m getting older, so I don’t really have time to experiment like that anymore. Time is really money. If I have money, I have time. Right now, I don’t have the money I need, so every decision has to be the right one. Which path do I go down? In 2023, I decided to do less events and focus on building something bigger. I’ve questioned that decision many times because financially, the parties worked. But to grow, you’ve got to go through hard things and figure out a new plan. Right now, I’m figuring that out. Looking back from 2016 to 2026, it’s a testament to God’s faith and love. Thinking about 2036, by the grace of God, things will be sweeter. i keep hearing these days there aren’t many parties for my age group and that is very debatable! but i know what ppl mean. the parties they enjoyed in their 20s are widely enjoyed by ppl in their 20s. ppl outgrew 25+ too. so i’m trying a ting, sumn for the first generation of @rec.ess folks. a limited number of keyrings have been made and this will be ur access token to these day one events. there won’t be many of these parties tho. there may be future perks too, especially as we continue to build out recessland. iteration is key to longevity 🥂 #recess10

the process of making this video was a rollercoaster man… sifting through thousands of photos, videos and graphics to put together something that isn’t supposed to be nostalgic. it’s a reflection of time well spent, a recognition of bare ppl’s effort and a celebration of seeing an idea through over and over again. a lot to say but as i write this, i can’t think of a succinct way of delivering it. but i must say it was emotional going thru all the photos and videos, seeing faces come and go, rmbr’ing how life felt in that moment in time etc etc best thing for me tho is that it ain’t stopped fr, @rec.ess is developing into what it needs to be, it’s beyond a hype ting now. growing pains have been real but i’m most definitely enjoying the ride!!! watch the full vid on the @rec.ess page or youtube for that crispy 4k

i figured it’ll be a good idea share more of the archive soooo each month this year i’ll share some photos from the corresponding months and the stories behind em. starting with january 2018, it was a nice start to the year. i consider being sacked from topshop in july 2014 as a major fork in the road, it forced me to pursue a career in the creative industry. so this woulda been the start of my 3rd full year out ere.
