Excited to present to you all the film shot with
@lovell.small small for my upcoming release, Dali. A huge shoutout to him, he did me a huge favour by letting me drag him out to the middle of nowhere, his talent is undeniable.
Dali is inspired by the surrealist works of Salvadore Dalí, specifically ‘The Persistence of Memory’. The painting depicts what is essentially a beach dreamworld, with impossible objects, melting clocks, a low tide and distant limestone cliffs.
I spent a while looking for locations for this shoot, something to capture the surrealist nature of the painting, something that looked like it was from another realm. I thought about the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland, the Monaco Theatre in Cornwall, among others.
I eventually settled for a remote beach in Margate, called Kingsgate Bay Beach. It was perfect, not only because of the uncanny resemblance to the painting itself, but because of its virtual isolation-which is what the song is about.
A lot of the shots here really captured that surrealist feel for me. Horizons that seem to stretch infinitely. Grass growing through sand (had no idea that was even possible). A green mossy gradient that stained the limestone, almost like it was corrupting it. Even the first location we shot at, after leaving, ended up being completely swallowed by the tide in a matter of minutes-we would have been trapped otherwise. That’s a major theme in the song-how funny how life imitates one’s art.
The outfits were styled by me, one to blend in with the nature, and one to complete contrast it-symbolising a man out of place, alone. I did alright-I think.
I had a lot of fun, and I urge people to visit Kingsgate Bay. They had an amazing pub nearby called the
@captaindigbyinn which served Calamari. I didn’t expect to have Calamari on a cold beach photoshoot on the edge of nowhere.
