For most of the time, I don't really share much about my experience of Taiwan with my friends, because it's not that relatable. People know I'm from Taiwan, but I don't know if they truly know what this warm and romantic city looks like. Maybe they've seen a few Taiwanese New Wave films and have some idea of it, but it's not the most desired travel destination in East Asia.
I thought it was a joke, but i still have friends who mistake Taiwan for Thailand.
This is my second time shooting for Vogue Taiwan cover.
Last time, I was still in my temporary tattoo phase. In my earlier work, I tended to widen the level of resonance so l could reach a broader audience. I knew I couldn't just directly talk about this comparatively niche background, or it would become limiting.
It's like when you're talking with international friends. You naturally cater to their cultural references, and unconsciously shut down your own, just to fit in and find a new way to be funny. It's that constant thought of you have no idea how funny l am in my own language
This time, I want to prioritize my home. I want it to resonate with people in Taiwan, and also welcoming my foreign friends to see where I was born and raised-something I might have consciously or unconsciously gatekept before.
