Before the bridge is carved, the geometry has to be right. We strike a reference line to see exactly where the fingerboard meets the bridge, then measure string heightsâalways leaving a little extra room. Too tall can be adjusted. Too short canât.
From there, we draw the bridgeâs curvature to match the fingerboard _plus_ proper string height. Because strings arenât all the same size, the G side sits slightly higher than the E, allowing each string to vibrate and rotate freely.

đ¨Major Newsđ°
Carriage House Violins, the sales division of Johnson String Instrument, is proud to announce the historic sale of the 1714 âKneisel, GrĂźnâ violin by Antonio Stradivari, one of the most distinguished instruments from the master makerâs celebrated Golden Period.
Crafted in Cremona during what is widely considered the pinnacle of Stradivariâs career (circa 1700â1718), the âKneisel, GrĂźnâ violin is an outstanding example of the power, balance, and brilliance that define the instruments of this era. Its storied provenance includes renowned 19th-century Hungarian violinist and teacher Jacob GrĂźn, followed by one of his most illustrious students: Franz Kneisel.
Franz Kneisel (1865â1926) served as the founding concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he played for two decades and introduced American audiences to major violin works by Brahms, Ravel, Goldmark, and Schoenberg, as well as the world première of the DvoĹĂĄk American Quartet. He later became the first head of the violin department at what is now the Juilliard School. His legacy in shaping the American chamber music tradition is inseparable from this instrument, which now carries his name.
âThe Kneisel, GrĂźn is an instrument of extraordinary provenance and artistry,â said Robert Mayes, President of Carriage House Violins.
âIt is a privilege for us to have been a part of its
journey, and we are honored to carry forward the tradition of connecting great instruments with the musicians and institutions that will give them new life.â
Carriage House Violins remains a leading destination for fine stringed instruments and bows, serving musicians, collectors, and investors around the world.

Did you know the shape of a violin bridge is equal parts function and craftsmanship?
Jess breaks down the carving process â and how those elegant cutouts are as much about beauty as they are about the instrument.

Season 3 of Ask a Luthier with Jess Fox continues. đť
The saddle comes pretty well set from the factory â but the shape still matters. If it's too tall or too upright, it can actually pull itself out. The curvature keeps it seated correctly, and the overall height affects the angle the strings break over the bridge.
It's a small adjustment with a real impact â raising or lowering the saddle is one of the tools a luthier can use to dial in that string angle just right.

Did you know there's a wrong way to drill a peg hole? Too far toward the peg box wall and your pegs won't stay. Too close to the head and the windings bunch up. Every peg is marked, trimmed, and drilled by hand â because the difference of a few millimeters affects how your instrument plays for years!

Did you know setup starts with just two strings? Before the full set goes on, the G and E go on first â so our luthiers can check tailpiece length, measure string height, and file the bridge down to exactly where it needs to be. Get it wrong here and everything that follows is off. Drop your questions about Lutherie here! đ
