Tai-kē hô 大家好! 🏮 We are finally nearing production for my upcoming Hokkien short film, 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐨𝐧 卡紙月亮. Produced by @carloencisocatu and adapted from my late grandfather Chua Bing Ching’s autobiographical essay, this film follows a young filmmaker’s journey through memory and grief. This is a labor of love for the 𝐓𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, featuring an 𝐚𝐥𝐥-𝐓𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 and told in our language, 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐤𝐤𝐢𝐞𝐧. We need your help to bring this piece of our heritage to the screen. On Saturday, we had a double-bill of outstanding events with six equally outstanding filmmakers. In the afternoon, we hosted a panel moderated by Lilly Zhuang, who was joined by Victor Fan, Viet Vu, John Peter Cadiz Chua and Kit Hung. @zhuanglilly @tristanpupazzi @vietvu.phm @johnpeterchua @kithunghk They discussed their identities as members of the Asian diaspora, and the limits of the word diaspora, how it intersects with ideas such as in-betweenness, double-occupancy, extraterritoriality… They also touched upon the necessity to (mis)translate their work to make it fit into a transnational festival market, as well as the fractured relationship between their practice and their homeland. In the evening, we screened six incredible short films: all of them were healing, meditative, and emotional. After the screening, directors Lilly, Victor, Viet, John Peter, and Zhou Zhenyu @yu_zhen_zhou joined us for a long and detailed Q&A moderated by Antonio Guo and Francesco Quario. @kg_aac @franquario The audience asked many insightful questions on landscape, the use of space and time, identity, and film stock vs digitality. We are proud to have hosted two events of this caliber, and to have helped elevate and bring together such a varied, fresh collection of short films and filmmakers. See you today for our closing events! Photos by @claraayn

“I wish I had this book as a kid,” Marvin told me as he scrolled through the PDF of his upcoming Philippine Hokkien dictionary. This afternoon, Ahia @ivanhomd , tour guide, cultural practitioner, and very dear friend, invited us to a private screening of the 1934 silent film The Goddess (神女) at Sine Pop in Cubao. It was a treat to finally meet Sir Carlson Chan, the founder of the space and a supporter of my upcoming film, along with photography historian Sir Jay Javier. Later, @marvin.sy.942 and I headed to World Kitchen in Gateway 2. We’ve been friends since our teens, first meeting at a Xiamen tour back in 2012. Today, he was going over his dictionary and his translation for my upcoming Hokkien-language short film. By total coincidence, I also stumbled upon Sir Nick, a deeply respected UP Film professor, and I was able to give him a copy of my book. As Marvin went over his work, I realized that these projects we’ve dedicated years to, his dictionary and workshops on Philippine Hokkien and my films and writings on Tsinoy stories, are the very things we searched for in our youth. It is a nice feeling to know we are growing up to become the adults we wish we had.

Patok na Patok! A Conference on Popular Culture & Media Studies Ateneo de Manila Communication Department April 29-30, 2026 It was such a pleasure to present at this year's Patok na Patok Conference! The last iteration happened a decade ago while I was still an undergrad, so coming back to present my paper, "From Resignification to Reclamation: Insider-Authored Autoethnographic Filmmaking & Chinese Filipino Identity," felt like a total full-circle moment. Huge thanks to Dr/Atsi @iamprofcox , Dr/Ahia @itchytoesadventures , Sir @aaronvicencio , and the entire Ateneo Comm faculty and staff for organizing such a meaningful conference. I really appreciated the company of conference buddies Dr @benok_castillo , @val.srfc , @crispytoeat , and Ahia @gershomchua . Definitely one for the books!

On April 10, I had the honor of returning to the Ateneo Communication Department to share my film, No More Crying (毋通閣吼咯), through a talk titled "Aesthetics and Mechanisms of Self-Representation." The session allowed me to reflect on my own practice and the history of Tsinoy stories on screen. We talked about moving beyond mainstream limits and exploring how new ways of making can produce new representations. Connecting with the students afterward was a beautiful full-circle moment. It reminded me of how this department first shaped me and gave me a chance to reflect on the path I’ve taken since my own student days. Deeply grateful to Dr./Atsi Christine R. Cox for the encouragement, and to Sir Aaron R. Vicencio for the warm introduction and moderation. Thank you to Sir Karlo Montenegro and Sir Ian Valderrama for the seamless organizing, and to my brother, Gershom Chua, for sharing his insights during the discussion. So good to be home! ❤️ #TsinoyCinema #Autoethnography #AteneoComm #Filmmaking #NoMoreCrying

Excited to be a part of the upcoming 2026 Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Summer School in Hong Kong! I’ll be part of the #Technologies cohort, exploring this year's theme: "Livable Futures: Asia as Worlding." The IACS network has been pivotal for me. After participating in the 2024 iteration at UP Diliman, the mentors and friends I met there have continued to shape my creative and research practice to this day. I’m honored to rejoin this community of 50 researchers and practitioners to explore what "livable futures" can look like through film and critical thought. See you in Hong Kong! 🇭🇰🎥
