Beautiful, thrilling, exploratory solo set from Damon Locks at CvsD today. Among the samples and sounds and words, I recognized a swatch of lyric but couldn’t place it, turns out it was “Everything Turns Grey” by Agent Orange. Expect the unexpected! We are working on some records with Damon, more details soon. @blackmonumentensemble @corbettvsdempseymusic @corbettvsdempsey #agentorange

Thrilled for Cauleen Smith on the pre-opening of her Wanda Coleman Songbook at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, as part of In Minor Keys, curated by Koyo Kouoh. These images are from the work’s installation at 52 Walker in 2024. @cauleen_smith @labiennale @52walkerstreet @moranmorangallery @davidzwirner @corbettvsdempsey

It’s a family affair! With our extended fams, Nicola Florimbi’s star-studded crew and Suellen Rocca’s multigenerational amalgam joining from near and far for last night’s tandem openings, which also featured Alan Abel’s “Hoax,” a show in The Vault and The McPhee focused on his many hoaxes, especially the tongue-in-cheek SINA, or Society for Indecency to Naked Animals. Formed in 1957, SINA sought to clothe domestic pets and zoo animals. Their motto: Decency Today Means Morality Tomorrow. @corbettvsdempsey @nicolaflorimbi #suellenrocca #alanabel @lamphole

A new diptych with Wendy and Roscoe. Preliminary moments of a promising archival project with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, unearthing incredible ephemera. #roscoemitchell #artensembleofchicago #aacm #creativemusic

Unique poster for early Peter Brötzmann exhibition, circa 1961, with a duet at the opening featuring Peter and drummer Dietrich Rauschtenberger. Would love to have been a fly on the wall. #peterbrötzmann #improvisedmusic #fluxus

Dynamite set tonight, approximately two hrs long, by Roscoe Mitchell with Mike Reed and Jason Adasiewicz. Roscoe brought some recent paintings which flanked the trio. Kicking ass and taking names. #roscoemitchell @reedmicj #jasonadasiewicz #creativemusic

Three extraordinary days outside Zurich working with Barry Guy on his archives, which will eventually transform our understanding of creative music in Europe. His daybook diaries alone are play-by-play scorecards of a musician and composer who was moving between disparate worlds of new music, improvisation, early music, and jobbing gigs that included appearances on sessions like the Rolling Stones’ “Angie.” Among treasures is the original manuscript for “Ode,” composed by Guy in 1970 for the London Jazz Composers Orchestra, released as a two-record set on Incus. I’m hand-couriering it to Chicago, where the rest of the materials will arrive in the hard-plastic tubs we’ve filled. A stone cold pleasure sorting out this trove together, hearing Barry’s stories, listening to recordings, checking out his fascinating scores. #barryguy #improvisedmusic #incusrecords #creativemusic #londonjazzcomposersorchestra

The new Secret History of Chicago Music has gone live on the @chicago_reader site! After witnessing this “surprise guest” at @emptybottle ‘s 33 1/3 anniversary late last year, (commemorating @johnccorbett and Ken Vandermark’s 90s Jazz series) I knew i had to write up this legend. Ed Wilkerson Jr.’s long and distinguished career as AACM head, Ethic Heritage Ensemble founding member, and his own genre-bending ensembles Shadow Vignettes and 8 Bold Souls, show a heady range indebted to all from classical composition and spoken word, to afrocentric free jazz and funk. It was time for Wilkerson to get his free thinking flowers....! Link in bio
