ENG: Check out this years festival poster, by Marthe Lea. We are very excited about the program, and can´wait to see you all in a bit over a month!

Big announcement! Reception presents Mike Reed’s Separatist Party with support from Cian Nugent - 24 June, 8pm, Bello Bar. We are super excited about this show, Seperatist Party’s lp on Astral Spirits from 2023 is still on heavy rotation and the band features some of our favorite musicians from the last few years. Ticket link in bio or via RA, early birds available so snap em up while they’re still going! Chicago drummer Mike Reed convenes his Separatist Party in a twisting of musical landscapes. The project features poet/vocalist Marvin Tate, Ben LaMar Gay on Cornet, and the minimalist-psych trio of Bitchin Bajas. The Separatist Party’s music is often heavily rhythmic and synthesized, occasionally epic in scope, with Tate’s lyrics carving out images of fragmentation and isolation. Starting with minimal loops, and adding concentric layers the band creates a collage inspired as much by Don Cherry and Pharoah Sanders as by the Krautrock of Can, keyboard explorations of Terry Riley, and street preacher monologues. With his Chicago Inspirations program, drummer-composer @reedmicj seeks to both honor the past and look to the future of the city’s jazz scene. “You never know what the legacy’s going to be. You’ve got to kind of keep on doing it,” he says. Hear more from Reed about the concert, which celebrates two distinct eras in Chicago’s jazz history and features students from the @jazzinstitute ’s Jazz Links Program.

Chicago’s own @reedmicj — drummer, composer, and owner and director of Constellation and Hungry Brain — curates two sets honoring the legacy of jazz in the Windy City, featuring a powerhouse ensemble of improvisers and talented students from the @jazzinstitute of Chicago’s Jazz Links Program. Don’t miss this one-night-only performance on May 1.

Sunday, January 4, 2026, marks the start of the 25th year that Josh Berman and I have hosted the Sunday improvised music series at the Hungry Brain (aka, the transmission series). We hope to have a larger retrospective later in the year, but we figure we’d kick things off with Jason Adasiewicz and Joshua Abrams, who were just some of the people around in those early days. Here are some old photos for nostalgia’s sake. On Sunday, May 25, Marshall Allen turns 101, and the next day, I turn 51. I’m catching up. Had a great night playing with the legendary Marshall last night at Solar Myth in Philly, alongside Luke Stewart, James Brandon Lewis, and Dave Hotep. Thanks to Ars Nova workshop.
