New York-based artist @jo___fish navigates a fluid space between figuration and abstraction with poignancy, evoking the same ambiguity that increasingly defines how we experience the contemporary world. โ

Artist Focus | Jo Fish | pt.1
Q. Where are you from, and how has your living environment shaped you?
A. I was born and grew up in Michigan, USA. Itโs the classic story of always wanting to get out of my small town environment and move to the big city. I grew up idolising the NYC 80โs scene. Two weeks after I finished school, I left for NYC and have been here ever since, I couldnโt be happier. I love it.
Q. Which artists or movements have deeply inspired you?
A. I love to think about Renaissance, Abstract Expressionist and Pop. Schiele for his suffering, de Kooning for his fear, Guston for his banality, da Vinci for his dissection of everything around us and for having an interest in more than just what comes out of his hand. Botticelli, Frankenthaler for letting go, Warhol for culture and means of production, Basquiat for his rawness, Albert Oehlen for bringing new technology into it but keeping it beautiful, Toulouse Lautrec for his unfinished look, Degas for his pain. Itโs turned into something more, but I also like KAWS.
Q. What are your main sources of inspirationโtravel, music, literature, philosophy?
A. Itโs hard to describe how one absorbs the world around them, but I love philosophy and I love to think.
