New York-based artist @jo___fish navigates a fluid space between figuration and abstraction with poignancy, evoking the same ambiguity that increasingly defines how we experience the contemporary world. โ  โ  As everything becomes digitalized, the tension between physical and digital, hand and machine, flesh and virtual finds tangible form in Fishโ€™s work. โ  โ  Her paintings become resonant documents of our time. โ  โ  Her latest show, โ€œThe Speed of a Trend,โ€ which recently opened at @hdm_gallery in Beijing and closes November 22, presents ten of her most recent works.โ  โ  Observer caught up with the artist ahead of her latest show of ten of her most recent works, which recently opened at @hdm_gallery in Beijing and closes November 22. โ  โ  Read more by @elisartgal at the link in our bio Photo by @catmarchenko

Artist Focus | Jo Fish | pt.1 Q. Where are you from, and how has your living environment shaped you? A. I was born and grew up in Michigan, USA. Itโ€™s the classic story of always wanting to get out of my small town environment and move to the big city. I grew up idolising the NYC 80โ€™s scene. Two weeks after I finished school, I left for NYC and have been here ever since, I couldnโ€™t be happier. I love it. Q. Which artists or movements have deeply inspired you? A. I love to think about Renaissance, Abstract Expressionist and Pop. Schiele for his suffering, de Kooning for his fear, Guston for his banality, da Vinci for his dissection of everything around us and for having an interest in more than just what comes out of his hand. Botticelli, Frankenthaler for letting go, Warhol for culture and means of production, Basquiat for his rawness, Albert Oehlen for bringing new technology into it but keeping it beautiful, Toulouse Lautrec for his unfinished look, Degas for his pain. Itโ€™s turned into something more, but I also like KAWS. Q. What are your main sources of inspirationโ€”travel, music, literature, philosophy? A. Itโ€™s hard to describe how one absorbs the world around them, but I love philosophy and I love to think. Jo Fish | The Speed of a Trend On view until 22 November 2026 HdM Gallery Beijing, Square Room ๐Ÿ“ท @catmarchenko
