“The finest moment” from Music Director @clairechaseflute ’s Density 2036 sampler, according to the @sbindependent , was @craigtaborn ’s "Busy Griefs and Endangered Charms"—an hour-long, shape-shifting work that blurred the line between structure and freedom.
Featuring Chase, Taborn, @susie.ibarra , and Joshua Rubin (@jnruby ), the piece unfolded as a mesmerizing tapestry of jazz, improvisation, and atmosphere.

The soundSCAPE faculty had the pleasure of workshopping and performing the music of @barenboimsaidakademie composers last week in Berlin. Thank you to the Akademie for hosting us!
We’re now settling into our home of two weeks at the Hindemith Music Centre in Blonay, Switzerland. Continuing our work of supporting the music of emerging composers around the world!
The program features works by Bach, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Tania León, and concludes with the West Coast premiere of @lizalimcomposer ’s "How Forests Think"—a powerful reflection on ancient forests as vibrant, symbiotic communities where “stories, dreams, and thoughts inhabit multiple forms in a living matrix.”

It was an immense pleasure today to hear @jnruby rehearse a solo bass clarinet piece I wrote 17 years ago for tomorrow afternoon’s Tesserae show. He plays it beautifully and with great nuance, and for me it’s a strange and rather lovely sensation to hear something I wrote that long ago - it’s the oldest piece of mine that I still include in my worklist.
You should come to the show if you can! 2pm in Sierra Madre. Josh has programmed a lovely collection of old and new works, also including a CPE Bach sonata for violin and fortepiano that’s one of my very favorite pieces from the 18th century, some Michael Finnissy where we’ll be joined by bari sax player @tiesenga , more single-reed delights, and a period instrument Mozart Kegelstatt trio.
I'm excited to contribute Milton Babbitt's My Ends Are My Beginnings to @rkcrlsn 's mammoth and ever-expanding effort to record and meticulously produce all of Babbitt's works. This is one of his largest solo pieces and I'm grateful for the critical ears of @musicatcloserange , Madison Greenstone, @blackpantsclarinet , and Anthony Burr. And to @moserellie for designing the "clariboros" art!
