As I drive to Meredith Brooks Abbott’s 55-acre ranch in Rincon Canyon, I find myself thinking about the legendary painter Monet and the garden that he built in Giverny, south of Paris. The serenity of Giverny allowed Monet to shift away from the unruliness of painting outdoors and provided the master painter with a calm, comforting, and highly organized environment. Similarly, Brooks Abbott built herself a garden adjacent to the Victorian farmhouse dating from the 1870s that she shares with her husband, Duncan. She dug a pond in it and placed her studio near the main house. From the threshold of her artistic quarters, you can study the interplay of water, sky, and light — allowing you to focus on the imminence of the experience. Her garden blends effortlessly with the surrounding natural vegetation of the Carpinteria Valley — and Meredith seems to have organized the color palette in its flora — creating an intimate, personal landscape of her own. I couldn’t help but assess that her home, her meticulous garden, and her studio form a “living laboratory,” where one of Santa Barbara’s most respected artists has honed her inimitable oeuvre while also raising her beautiful family of both ranchers and artists. Her farmstead has become integral to her remarkable artistic career, and at the same time, it has breathed purpose into her life. To read the full cover story, click on the link in our bio, visit independent.com/cover-stories, or check out your nearest newsstand. Out of town and can't get to a newsstand in Santa Barbara County? Drivers on Modoc Road along the Modoc Preserve will see a reduction in traffic congestion with the completion of the Modoc Multi-Use Path on Friday. The orange traffic cones and 25 mph speed limit that have been up through the construction will be removed. Cyclists will now be able to ride along a continuous corridor from Arroyo Burro Beach to Isla Vista. The path is about one mile long and 10 feet wide as well as ADA compliant. This section connects the Obern Trail with the Las Positas path, making a continuous stretch to keep walkers and cyclists safer than having to share Modoc Road with motorist driving at the 45 mph speed limit. “Our goal is to have a path all the way from county line to county line. And this is helping to make that happen,” said Marjie Kirn, Santa Barbara County executive director of the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments. For the full story from reporter Elaine Sanders, click on the link in our bio or visit Independent.com. 📸: Courtesy

Santa Barbara authorities have successfully prosecuted a 35-year-old city resident under a new California law that criminalizes the creation, possession, and distribution of AI-generated child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). The case against Dayton Aldrich, who worked for the City of Santa Barbara as a community development specialist when he was arrested in August 2025, is among the first on the Central Coast to utilize the new legislation. Assembly Bill 1831 was drafted in response to the emergence of deepfake technology and “nudify” apps capable of creating images indistinguishable from real photographs. It closed a legal loophole by including AI-generated materials under existing state penal code for CSAM and is meant to combat the subsequent explosion of illicit content across the dark web. At the time of his arrest, Aldrich was the board president of the Winchester Canyon Gun Club and was known to keep multiple firearms at his apartment. Police surprised him in the middle of the night and took him into custody without incident. They seized more than 20 registered guns, high-capacity magazines, body armor, and approximately 10,000-15,000 rounds of ammunition. Though Aldrich initially faced a number of felony charges, he ultimately pleaded guilty to a single count of possessing CSAM. With no prior criminal history, he was sentenced to a year in county jail, two years of probation, and a mandatory lifetime sex offender registration. Shortly after his arrest, Aldrich was fired from his city job and voted off the board of the gun club. For the full story from Senior Editor Tyler Hayden, click on the link in our bio or visit Independent.com. 📸: Courtesy

I had a problem. One minute, I’m happily strumming my acoustic guitar, and the next, my little E string snaps. After a quick scan of my studio, I’m left with the disheartening realization that I have no replacement strings. Zero. Where does one even purchase guitar strings in Santa Barbara these days? I will not give my money to Jeff Bezos if I don’t absolutely need to, and this certainly isn’t worth bothering my Sweetwater.com rep (shout-out Randy). With the seemingly David and Goliath struggle of online versus IRL, it might be hard for some to see the appeal of an honest-to-god music store as a consumer in 2026. But try-before-you-buy can make or break a musical purchase, and demoing a variety of gear can lead to satisfying discoveries. It’s my firm belief that a brick-and-mortar music store has the potential for unquestionable good in a day and age when the internet threatens to monopolize our collective attention, both economic and social. Enter: Riviera Music (@rivieramusicsb ). For the full story from Don Brubaker, click on the link in our bio or visit Independent.com. 📸: Don Brubaker / Santa Barbara Independent

Though I am by no means new to Santa Barbara, I still consider myself a novice when it comes to the top experiences in our beach town. And I had never visited the Rosewood Miramar Beachfront Resort (@rosewoodmiramarbeach ). It wasn’t unheard of for me — it is a five star hotel, hosting the Michelin star restaurant Caruso’s (@carusos ) — but Montecito is still high on my explore list. So I jumped at the chance to grab a spot at a dinner with a farm-to-table-style menu and crafted wine list to pair perfectly with the food. Part of the resort’s Bounty series, I was admittedly surprised when I found out that we would be eating on a private patio next to the railroad tracks, and even more surprised that all the guests would be sharing our evening together at an intimate, family-style table. For the full story from Richelle Boyd, click on the link in our bio or visit Independent.com. 📸: Maya Johnson (@rubylee.maya ) / Santa Barbara Independent

At 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, Santa Barbara City police, fire, and paramedics were dispatched to 600 East Cabrillo Boulevard — near East Beach Park and East Beach Volleyball Courts — after receiving reports of an unresponsive woman on the beach. When safety personnel arrived, they found the middle-aged woman with no signs of life laying in the sand, and she was pronounced dead. The identity of the woman has not been shared as officials contact her next of kin, and the cause of death is not known at this time. SBPD are currently investigating the incident. For the full story, click on the link in our bio or visit Independent.com. 📸: City of Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara turned the page on the inaugural Santa Barbara Literary Festival (@sb_literary_festival ), as hundreds of people gathered in a variety of downtown venues to celebrate the power of the written word. With more than 60 events to choose from, I attended six, all of which were uniquely entertaining and edifying. I started out Saturday morning at the Alhecama Theatre, with authors Heather Webb and Eliza Knight discussing “The Bold and the Beautiful,” highlighting women who break the rules and why we love these kinds of characters. Asked how she chooses and develops her characters, Knight, the author of 'Confessions of a Grammar Queen,' said, “It’s a really, really fun task of figuring out who you’re going to write about, whether you’re writing about a real person, or you’re creating a character inspired by real people, or just coming straight from your mind. So for me, it’s dependent on what I’m writing. For the full story from Arts & Culture Editor Leslie Dinaberg, click on the link in our bio or visit Independent.com. 📸: Leslie Dinaberg / Santa Barbara Independent

On Saturday, May 2, an intimate crowd of food lovers gathered for the Santa Barbara Literary Festival's Culinary Storytellers Panel at Santa Barbara's historic Pico Adobe. Guests purchased delicious treats from @gipsyhillbakery , @revemacarons , @heritagegoodsandsupply , and more at the event’s artisan marché. Then followed a lively conversation with the day’s all-female panel of food-based writers. We sat down and spoke with Anne-Marie Pietersma (@annemariepietersma ), author of ‘I’ll Have What Cheese Having,’ a book of cheese pairings inspired by rom-coms, and Andrea Lawson-Gray (@andrealawsongray ), author of ‘Convivir: Modern Mexican Cooking in California’s Wine Country.’ They filled us in on their favorite cookbooks, what drove them to writing, and even gave a few quick tips for making a quick yet satisfying meal. To watch the full video, click on the link in our bio or visit Independent.com. 🎥: Andrew Migliaccio (@migmoneyproductions ) / Santa Barbara Independent ✍️: Maya Johnson / Santa Barbara Independent

This Wednesday, May 13, experience an evening of live music and creativity at the live filming of Breaking Tunes at the Santa Barbara Public Library (@sbplibrary ). The night at the Faulkner Gallery will feature a performance by local artist Brayell (@brayellmusic ) and their band as part of Breaking Tunes, the 'Independent’s' video series highlighting local musicians. Brayell is an independent artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist from Goleta, California. A former 'American Idol' contestant, his music blends alternative hip-hop, indie rock, and melodic songwriting. The 'Independent' will be filming the performance, so audience members can get a behind the scenes look at how Breaking Tunes is made while enjoying the vibes and getting creative making their own zine pages during the show. This free event is open to all, but is best for adults.
