Enemies-to-lovers & an ill-advised road trip? (lbh, you had me at ill-advisedāØ)
An homage to the pairing* that launched a thousand ships**, Cat Sebastian's latest romance (and first contemporary) explores the relationship between two actors on the set of a Star Trek-esque sci-fi show. The vibe is more bickering-coworkers to-lovers than enemies-to-lovers, and in classic Cat Sebastian form, plot takes a backseat to intricate character development. It's heartwarming, cozy, and a perfect choice for fanfic lovers and readers who prefer character moments to plot twists.
*Sebastian credits the inspiration for the novel to a notorious letter from Gene Rodenberry (the creator of Star Trek) to Isaac Asimov asking for advice on how to handle two actors who were struggling to share the spotlight. Asimov's advice? Put them in every scene together. Thus was born the much beloved (and fanfic-fueling) close relationship between Kirk and Spock on Star Trek: The Original Series.
** The modern idea of fanfiction (and shipping), as we know and love them today, can be traced back to Star Trek fan zines in the 1960s. (But shout out to works like Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, which is, for all intents and purposes, self-insert Bible fanfiction.)
