We’re unbelievably excited to finally announce EUROPA. This one has been with us for a long time. We wrapped Salvable almost two years ago now, but the seeds of this story go back more than a decade for us. Like all independent films, it’s taken an enormous amount of work behind the scenes just to get to this point. Nothing is handed to you. You fight, problem solve, push and slowly piece it together one step at a time in the hope that eventually everyone starts seeing the same film you do. So announcing today genuinely means a lot. We’ve somehow ended up surrounded by an incredible group of people on this one, Freya, Maria, William and Toby are all going to bring something really special to these characters, and teaming back up with Toby again honestly feels very full circle for us. Huge love as well to our producers James and Julian, and Fabrice. And of course to our casting director Aisling, who continues to break every rule possible on our behalf behind the scenes. On James Cosmo’s first day, something rare happened. We were blocking the scene. No cameras rolling, just a quiet rehearsal. Then James began to speak…Within seconds, the whole room changed. The crew stilled. And Toby, who’s as sharp and present as they come, just didn’t respond. Not because he was lost, but because he was watching. Held in it. We all were. It was one of those rare moments where we stopped being filmmakers and just became witnesses. James reminded everyone why he’s James Cosmo. This was always going to be a tough scene. We had bodies flying everywhere, fight choreography, an outdoor location, and the continuity nightmare you only sign up for willingly. On top of that, we decided to shoot the entire build up in one long take with no cuts, just pure performance. I remember Shia being dropped off that morning. He walks straight over, not quite his usual self. Truth is, we were all feeling the pressure. Eight pages of dialogue, a different accent, multiple marks to hit. It’s a lot for anyone. But we rehearsed hard that morning and somehow, by the afternoon, we were rolling. We ended up squeezing in 10 full takes. Every single one was a one take. Every single one was usable. What you’re seeing here is take 10. It’s not a perfect, but it captured Shia and Toby right on the edge…and that’s where the magic lives. Already seen it? We were tucked away in upstate New York for 10 days, staying in an Airbnb with Carl, Shia and Toby. A training camp, with The Cobra himself leading the charge, all in preparation for shooting Salvable. We brought a little camera with us and captured some moments, snapshots of a time when we really became a small family. Loved coming back to this and being reminded how delicate the space is between the page and performance. The words are there, but what matters is how the actor bends them or breaks them slightly. Those tiny shifts, a pause, a look, a choice to reach for or resist the line, that’s where the truth sits. We stayed true to what was written, but gave Toby and Kíla the freedom to find it in a way that belonged to them. That balance, between structure and instinct, is where directing lives for us. Salvable has been out in the world a little while now, but coming back to moments like this, we still feel the weight of it.
