Is ‘Audrey 2’ the best & most incredible animatronic mechanical lifelike puppet ever put on film? Perhaps! Feel free to weigh in, but there are only a handful of puppets at the cultural impact level of a ‘Yoda’ or an ’E.T.’ GREMLINS & DARK CRYSTAL comes immediately to mind, Jabba the Hutt, and beyond the 1980’s, we lately have Grogu a.k.a Baby Yoda*. Plus, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS shares the rare distinction of an Front-End Credit for the puppet creator: where the starring puppet characters in a film are so hugely crucial to the movie that the puppet creator earns an opening credit on the movie. And Magazine covers for the creator, not just the creation. Lyle Conway, who just passed away, is the man chosen by Frank Oz to create the puppets for Frank Oz’s solo non-Jim Henson directing debut. Chosen by Frank Oz! That is no small appointment. Just sitting here marveling at what Lyle Conway & team achieved with this next-level, masterful, wildly colorful incredible plant puppet creation. And the music & performances, human & puppet, is so fun!! RIP Lyle Conway.

*Disney can thank its lucky stars that Werner Herzog shamed Jon Favreau into keeping the puppet in the show rather than creating it digitally. I think it is safe to guess that if the new Baby Yoda was not a physical puppet; tangible, there-in-front-of-the-camera… well the newer STAR WARS shows might not have gotten past the 1st Season & would certainly not have sold much merchandise**

**I mean, does anybody even remember the name of the digital Yoda like character, a Central Character, played by Lupita Nyongo in JJ Abram’s STAR WARS 7 ?? I believe that if it was a puppet, it would have been more memorable.
MERCY, a movie I was the Key Makeup Artist on, is the #1 movie in the U.S.!! It’s an action sci-fi whodunit thrill-ride, and you can see it IMAX. Entertainment for entertainment’s sake, it’s a fun flick. Working with MU Dept Head Luisa Abel, we did the makeup together on the beautiful superstar Rebecca Ferguson, making her look somewhat digital as Maddox: an A.I. judge, jury & executioner , the new future of law enforcement (sorry, Robocop). Shoutout for her excellent wig work by Reneé Vaca. Our cast was great, & especially memorable was being makeup artist for Kali Reis! All filmed here in lovely Hollywood, California ❤️🌞The trickiest makeup for me, I won’t say on who, is an intentionally invisible (hopefully?) prosthetic makeup which plays in tight close-ups for much of the movie. I won’t spoil it but let me know if you know! Big thanks to makeup team colleagues Kelsey Berk & Angela Nogaro for tremendous help & hard work making this movie👍🎥🎬🍿

If it weren’t for Rick making the art of Makeup FX and also the ‘Making-Of’ makeup fx look SO fun, cool & inspiring & worth the effort / time to learn, well, my life would have likely gone down a totally different path. And while there were others who inspired me, they all are connected genealogically somehow to Rick Baker. When I met Rick, he was a long-established Hollywood legend & a King in his castle called Cinovation. I auditioned for THE GRINCH & was accepted into his world, a member of his team, where I received the ultimate education for most of the entire next decade working with Rick & his stellar crew of genius artists on a bunch of movies. I’m very grateful for the mentorship & shared times, though now it seems so brief & long ago like a bright flash! A salute and tip o’ the hat to Whiz-kid turned Full Wizard! Take care if you dare stumble upon its lair, in that rarefied air where it’s out to scare and ensnare. This nightmare Hare likes its meat rare and tends not to share, except for the glare of its spooky hollow stare before you tumble down the stairs, and maybe down there, you stub your toe on a chair. The HORROR!!!
They’ll Get You In The End! Any GHOULIES fans out there? Cricket-cricket…. Hah! honestly I’ve always liked the poster more than the actual movie! The poster is SO funny on several levels, I really love it. It features not one but TWO credits for the makeupfx creators Buechler x2! With a solo close-up portrait of a crooked, somewhat janky, wonderful mechanical monster puppet! So while I’m between jobs, chilling at home in the summertime, I squeezed this guy out in about a week, sculpted on my iPad & 3D printed & hand-painted - with painting assistance from my son Kyle who has become a prolific amazing model painter due to his WARHAMMER fandom. PS if you ARE going to watch a GHOULIES movie, watch GHOULIES 2 - it is way better than the first and it’s set at a carnival, a favorite setting of movies for me. The makeup fx creature monster puppets are cool & vastly improved over the original. And it is from 1987: year of so many of the best makeup fx movies! Now to bring this finished model to his new home … from my laboratory to my lavatory, of course!

This photo is from the set of a Ron Howard 2003 movie called THE MISSING. I was the Prosthetic Makeup Artist for the movie, mainly focused on the antagonist of the film, but I was there to help with all makeup dept needs. John Blake was Dept Head & created this appliance but he was too busy to apply it, so I had the pleasure of stepping in to do this makeup & having a work moment with Mr. Kilmer. I recall that he was kind to me.
Ironically, this character makeup is meant to add backstory to his character of having survived a scalping attempt, and my most recent posts are the same concept: Post-scalping survival wounds- but the makeup jobs are exactly 20 years apart; 2003 & 2023- when I worked on AMERICAN PRIMEVAL. I guess the newer makeups have grown in complexity...
Aside from the thrill of doing this makeup on a star of Val Kilmer’s magnitude, his work in prior Westerns is iconic - he will always be our Huckleberry.
R.I.P to a Real Genius, a shaman, a singer, a dancer and an entertainer blessed, for a time, with many wild gifts suited to being a true Hollywood legend.

AMERICAN PRIMEVAL has an eyeless cackling Witch character. I greatly enjoyed doing that creative makeup; the sequence was originally called ‘Cannibal Camp’. The cannibalism was toned way down in the final show, but Makeup Designer Howard Berger’s idea was that her eyeballs had been scooped out, possibly as hors d’oeuvres. His KNB EFX produced a great prosthetic appliance representing this idea. The actress playing this crone, Alaina Zachary, couldn’t have been kinder & more lovely to work with- and in real life, she looks NOTHING like this witchy character! (See pic 6)
