Can’t believe it’s been five years since Chalo came out.
A project that started quietly, without any grand plan, and ended up shifting the way I think about community, collaboration, and what’s possible when South Asian artists back each other. It was scrappy, fast, instinctive — we were raising money for communities in need, but we were also showing what could happen when our scenes, sounds, and stories sat side by side.
Bringing together 28 South Asian artists across the world for essentially a charity compilation in a matter of months during the height of a pandemic was no easy feat. Yet, we did it and raised thousands of pounds.
Looking back, Chalo was a hinge moment. It changed the direction of my work and set a lot in motion that I’m still building on now with @dialledin_ . It planted the first seed for everything that followed.
Forever shout out to @sarathykorwar and @ahadadreamx for telling me to email @jitwam — who brought in his team at The Jazz Diaries, including @manlikenigey and @amandaaahugnkiss . Shout out @asfandyark for bearing with us and also thank you forever to @sharmatinahi , whose work on Chalo shaped Dialled In’s visual identity for years after.
Five years on, I’m still grateful for every artist who said yes, and for everyone who listened.
